vegetable is the english dorlvotivc of two kindred latin verba yere- tare meaning to enliven and verere to be lively since vegetables give us much sustenance to keep us lively w should never say that we dont like vegetables few people dislike asparagus the fresh vege table of the month when it is cooked and served properly tbe water for cooking asparagus 3 inches in a deep saucepan should be boiling the time of the boiling period should be 22 to 23 minutes depending upon the quantity this method retains the bright green colour and cooks asparagus until tender while saving the most nutri tive value we use the top part of the double boiler and place a couple of zinc sealer rings in the bottom o hold the stalks upright in this way the tender tips are not overcooked ingenuity in the seasoning of veg etables enhances their flavour and appetite appeal paprika will give a subtle flavour to chopped greens on day and a leek a more daring one the next canned beets steeped in a hot to his shelves taking a little of this and a little of that putting it all into the kettle until it was nearly full finally the big kettle began to steam and boll going glurp glurp glurp gradual ly it boiled down to just a little in the bottom just one hour more to cook and then well know if it is going to be a success or not said the green gobln in the meantime i need three drops of sweet cedar oil right from the heart of the biggest cedar in the forest quite naturally the one they chose for the job was mr wood- worm because he was the best woodborer in the whole forest when mr woodworm heard that he was to have tills important job he got so excited that he went scooting- up a tree near by and bumped his head on a branch which nearly knocked him out he came down again quickly looking ruther silly but still very happy in the meantime father squir rel hud made u little pot to carry the sweet cedur oil in using half u hazel nut with a bit of wire grass twisted thro for a handle off went mr woodworm carrying the little pot and whistling a merry tune it wasnt long before he was back with not three drops but six drops of sweet cedar oil- when the green goblin told him what a good job he had done you should have seen htm stick out his chest and strut around however ho had a reason to do so and we can eas ily forgive him by this time the magic potion was ready for the final touches tho three drops of cedar oil and the pinch of fresh star dust the green goblin put in tho sweet ce dar oil there was a gurgling and a foaming which soon settled down now for the fresh star dust ev eryone just held his breath as the gr goblin got the bottle of star dust down from the shelf he toolc a tiny little pinch of it and threw it in bang there was a terrific hits like a steam engine and a great cloud of thick heavy smoke curled up from the kettle and formed a great question mark there rt stayed in the air as solid as e piece there no not odd people but hundred odd the
