weekly newspapers associations and tho ontarioquebec division of the cwna the editors corner too small for ward politics next year if enough people vote yes to the question whether they favour the election of council by general vote will mark the end of the ward system of municipal government for georgetown the ques tion is not a momwtoua one but it has one important aspect it can subdue to some extent at least the old bugnboo which time and again creeps into nomination meetings when an aspirant for office declines to run because he doesnt want to cause an election it is alwaysdifficult to understand why a number of people dont want to cause an election if for no other rea son than to show their faith in democratic elections which can happen in all too few places in this sad old world of today we have every right to be proud to cause elections and for our part we would like to see every council seat everjy school board position every hydro post contested every year there is some fear in a few minds that general elections may overload council with members from tho more heavily populated sections of town past statistics show that the irfeverse might be the case it is many years since ward 2 which controls the balance of voting power has supported a mayoralty candidate and it is a fact that the smallest ward three has most often had three or four candidates all seeking office while the other wards are content with acclamations ejection by general vote if it encourages more men to seek office is worth a try it will not necessar ily give georgetown a better council but it will give those who sit on it a feeling that they have some back ing from the voters which many members through the years have only had in reverse the fact that no one ran against them ward politics have their place in bigger towns where a ward councillor can look after the interests of his bailiwick here in town every councillor represents every voter and it is seldom that a ward is ever mentioned once election day has passed educational changes hon dana porters announcement last week thflt radical changes will be made in the public and high school systems in ontario still awaits clarification mr porter outlined the broad plan to have four groupings rather than the present two and intimated that the first and second three grades of the present public school would be combined one teacher having charge of all three the idea is to bring children along the educa- tional road at the proper speed which their ability re quires without the stigma of failing or the practice as at present of some of the faster children skipping grades this will have certain advantages although we should not like to see any child remain under one teachers guidance for more than one school year every teacher is good for some children and bad for others and part of education is in having a child adapt himself to different teachers this of course can be overcome in town schools as there will be several teach ers in every grade and students can be shifted among them georgetown has its own problems looming in the verynear future anyone who read last weeks pub lic school column would note the large increase com ing in public school population ini952 the extreme situation of 105 beginners contrasts with beginning classes up to the present of roughly half this number last year it looked as if a two or three room addition at the school would fill our needs for the foreseeable future now the question of starting to build a new school which can be added to will face next years school board the ingersoll tribune has a criticism of mr por- ters announcement because it comes before the pub lication of an expensive royal commission report of which the minister of education claims to have no knowledge either he is letting the cat out of the bag in advance or he is very unwisely announcing changes which might radically differ from the commissions investigations either way it doesnt seem quite cricket i pot pourri the christmas season always seems to intensify interest in lucky draws two recent ones include that for a basket of groceries at the daughters of the church bazaar on some thing under neighbour graham famells back porch after a number of attempts he wriggled through an opening and seconds later with a great clatter of wings a large brown bird swooped across the yard dog in pur suit and made a threepoint landing beside ed halls garage no hunter and always in sympathy with the underbird we shooed the dog away but by this time the partridge or pheasant whichever it might be had- disappeared we consider it a compliment that a district man who complained that he could never get a look at this herald ordered a second subscription which willbp reserved for father only that opens up a whole new field for selling more subscriptions lack of adequate news coverage of norvaland district has always worried us so it is with pleasure that we welcome mrs j e man of the protestant faith by suggesting the lutheran term pastor which they claim is coming into use in the states clinton merchants are holding their third annual clinton day this saturday and the
