georgetown a georgetown out wedbmsday tfecenber 7th 1949 in the mail bag sear editor v we who have the opportunity on j monday deoember 12 to express through our ballot our opinions freely without fear of consequen ce should observe a two minute silence of thanksgiving lfr recogni tion of the courage and sacrifice of the thousands of men and women who savevthelr lives not only in the war but in- civic struggle in order that we might hape this prlv- legc among others pi free men but these lives were not given so that you or i might lightly thoughtlessly or for a price a glass of beer money a favour or to satisfy a spite or grudge misuse this freedom and batter our votes for a mess of potaget every voter owes this town ofours the obliga tion of studying and understanding f all the usuos at stake in electing a council to run the affairs of the town for another year so vote but vote with a deep sense of responsibility some of us are being appealed to 6n the grounds of an alleged wrong done to a former town employee some ore being asked tor our vote so that an old feud may be carried on which in a civilised community like ours should have been forgot ten long ago if indeed there was ever any reason for its appearance in the first place let us think act vote clearly about the affairs of our town like intelligent adults the council is elected to meet the needs of community life that cannot be met by each of us sep arately and as individuals water light sewage sanitation educa tion health police and tire protec- hon etc bow have the councils of the lost three years discharged their duty ind responsibility in regard to these things poorly in differently or well host of the criticism of the last month or two has been centred around the water shortage crisis and how to meet it the crisis la not peculiar to georgetown lon don brussells walkerton and many other places in ontario are suffer ing in the same way but there is a small group of interested citi zens who have taken it upon themselves to tell the council bow this matter could have been solved by comparatively simple inexpen sive ways these citizens are not water experts but just ordinary citizens like the councillors of the past three years only they have sever sat in council and accepted tnd discharged the responsibility of doing something about the wa ter crisis so that entitles them to make all sorts of suggestions without guaranteeing any definite results so that if they were to prove useless they could say that that was not what they recommended all this has not deterred them from noising abroad their unin formed opinionslelling half truths and slandering men who were do ing the best they could after con sulting competent authorities in spite of all this they have set up their suggested solutions for which they assume no risks or lesponsibtllty as to their efficiency or applicability in direct opposition to and in contradiction of town water supply specialists who have been called in by the town coun cil to advise them as to the best way to meet the water shortage crisis mr roberts recommended by the best informed department of health sanitary engineer in north america recognized as one of the best town water engineers in on tarlo an engineer who has had forty years experience in advising many towns likp georgetown on just such problems was engaged after careful andextendcd survey of the water reservoirs supply sources springs and the history of the development of the two sour ces of water that we have had up to now he advised that the silver- creek source was rapidly decreas ing and with the increase in de mand for water in georgetown might at any time suddenly play out and we would find ourselves in a very critical situation re told the council there was no hope for us short of discovering a new and more adequate supply of wa ter the council fortunately lost no time in acting on l advice with despatch but before the plans could be fully implemented the crisis about which he had warned oil happened your council then showed initiative and quickly cal led into consultation all the indus tries parks board garages and cit izens at large and in two days by the wholehearted cooperation of all the new source of water ade quate for a town three times the size of georgetown was connected 1 up in a temporary way and the crisis is passed itvou had been mayor reeve deputy reeve or councillor to whom yould vou listen on whose advice would you act that of roup of interested but ineompe- fant la this regard citizens ob 0 fully qualified engineer who knows the problem thoroughly from a forty years experience in solving just such problem if time and space permitted we could demonstrate trw the council of the last three years has handled its other responsibilities in the pame sound efficient manner first securing competent advice and then following it tho provincial police system will assure us of competent police protection at a minimum cost a young ambitious local bcap exserviceman has been engaged as town foreman and has iromlse of becoming a highly competent foreman the sewage has been installed and extended roads have been restored to good condition artificial ice is ours and through the businesslike hand ling by the board of parks man agement is paying for itself sev enty two houses have been built and occupied by veterans is there any voter who will say that any of these debenture debt features should hot have been adopted think get the facts not the its and buts and let us elect a council which will be sound com petent economical and not one which will just sit yours sincerely a maelaren dear b2t editor- may i beg borrow or steal a little of your valuable space to have no complaints and i would restaulrant proprieto not now be running for council for this space mr editor much thanks r b w 0rr december 8th 1040 dear mr editor at nomination meeting it was pointedly stressed that ratepayers are inclined to criticize the council among themselves but lack the courage to make known their com plaints to the council as a body here is a chance to be entirely franlc- just how many ratepayers in georgetown approve of the mem bers of council being paid for the meetings they attend this idea which the ratepayers never had a chance to approve or disapprove has been decided by our own town councillors like it or not if our council- is genuinely high- minded and wishes to serve their icllowmcn then why make a mock- cry of it just why should they notgive voluntoryjifcrvice just as tchool trusteesend members of other public services do yes we know there arc definite personal expenses connected with the duties of mayor and council so there are with lodges bcrvlce clubs churches fair boards veterans red cross womens institutes etc itc there is something genuinely fine in voluntary service but who the weather answer mr maclarcns letter wmehlynn get sentimental about electing appeared in your issue of novom- a body of men who set their own ber 30th quote marks indicate priceqr service after they get excerpts from his letter elected 1 something was sold at the very truly yours nomination meeting by a condl- w f bradley date for municipal office about the merits of a low mill rate paying for work done out of current tax rate and the avoidance of deben ture debt are we to assume that mr mae laren docs not consider these three principles of civic administration the essence of sound civic busi ness sense to use his own words 2 is a low mill rate necessarily a good thing yes definitely 3 perhaps it may be low be cause for years councils did not take caro of the necessary re- airs and maintenance of vital services i am glad he said perhaps wed acton man at a permanent roads over as long a iielod as is wise and see that the people that use these services ten fifteen or twenty years from now help to pay for them one good reason is the interest on the
