weakly wspapar association and tha ontarioquebec dlvlslcir of the cwjya yr- v- fc the ecjitog6rrier loor sujtort for ice show it was uiifprtunaie that a combination of trpum- stances put ftie grc ice revile in the red on friday an attendance of 300 people did not justify the work which hud gone into the show nor the quality of enter- tainrnent provided the poor attendance was just one of those thirigs an iriipqrtant masonic lodge meeting and a lome scots dance in brampton a late evening for junior farmers the night before when they held their annual dance ot the brant inn and playoff hock ey before and after which takes a heavy slice of the budget for most georgetowners it is to be hoped that poor attendance at the initial ice show will not discourage those responsible from re peating the effort next year those who did attend were loud in their praise the comedy numbers and the effortless grace of peter firstbrook who is in the opinion of experts the coming world champion he is only 1 7 years old nowl were high spots and of course both production numbers by the local skaters with their colourful costumes drew a big hand from the spectators white it is not our business to say so we wonder if it wouldnt be a happy combination for both groups if next year the girls pipe band and the skating club pooled their efforts for a joint carnival it could cer tainly pack the house for one performance and might easily draw capacity crowds two nights in a row the overhead for both groups would be considerably redu ced and local skaters cjh contribute something extra to a show regardless of how good the visiting stars are voices objection to dance drinking agricultural representative j e whitelock who contributes an excellent column of farm news to the herald and other halton yveeklies was hot under the collar this week and wrote a stinging rebuke to a few of the guests at the haltoh junior farmers dance last week it didnt seem to fit into a news column so we bluepencilled it intending to use it editorially mr whitelock was annoyed at a small group not active junior farmers who fopnd it necessary to come forti fied and their presence was embarrassing to the dance committee it was claimed this year for the first time since the juniors star ted their yearly dance five years ago we were unable to attend so cannot give any personal views on the matter at all we can say that the at home always has been one of the nicest affairs that one could pos sibly attend there has been some minor drinking but- nevefextremes which anyone could consider objection able and if this happened this year it is unfortunate drinking is most certainly not necessary for enjoyment of a dance and it should particularly be kept at a mini mum when so many of those attending are in their eens on the other hand a conservative amount of drinking by those who care to do so does not necessar ily detract from such a social function pot pourri rumour has it that a former local man will soon be returning to towrrns manager of a main street busi- neas at long last it looks as if spring is coming and the gardeners can get to work last year we were busy digging on easter weekend but this year there has been no incentive so far to get out on the land like most tely readers we follow thomas richard henrys column and particularly like his kidding of typographical errors in that and other papers we werefea disappointed when he failed to notice in the globe and mail an item which said in a flood account that in one town the pressure of flood waters burst a dame the best wishes of their many friends will oro with mr and mrs charles chapman who return to england this week to make their home after living for many years in georgetown the mcgibbon house is under- going extensive renovations the vacant store at the corner is no mort and a new beverage room for ladies ia located in this apace thereis still a lot of work to be done and the new rodm is temporarily being used as mens beverage room the dailyt papers and radio commentators are missing a good bet in not reporting more fully intermediate b hockey activities it ia sel dom that this group ia mentioned on rado sport sum maries although there are always items aboutameri can leagues a letter last week complained of the ticket distribution for playoff hockey last year but we shouldnt imagine that there are any complaints this ymt the adoption of subscribers ticket was a stroke- pi genius it not only brought the hockey club some j55 r but also- avoided any arguments about f in tne sundridge series
