b ackefman eg pleasant reporting for georgetown it fills a to industrial pi ugr which was leftr lilif provincial paper ltd made the decision a few years ago to close down the paper making eiidtjf their business here and rluts the hum of life into a building which has since stood empty the new firm will also help to diversify industry which is always a good thing for a town is not on a sound footing unless there is a good variety of occu pations available up to the present we have counted heavily on paper and electrical products to provide full employment and while the three firms which employ the bulk of our population are steady and sound it is not good to have to count on them completely for em ployment stability it is a fact that the most wehave done in re cent years is to stand still in addition to the old paper mill three smaller businesses have closed the shoe company vic diggins federal sales and a wool len mill at the glen luckily smith 01 stone has in creased production and other industries- have held their own so there has been ho marked effect on em ployment but as pointed out above this has tended to concentrate industry into two types of products we wish mr ackerman the best and know that we speak for everyone when we say we are happy to see him here standard vacations hurt resorts the growing tendency for industries to stan dardize vacation periods is having a marked effect on those who depend on their livelihood on the vacation and tourst business there was a time when firms did not close down completely or if they did planned this on their own and the law of averages spaced it out nicely so that a certain percentage of people were on vacation during the two summer months nowadays not only are producers of similar products getting to- gether for the same vacation dates but allied industries are tying in with them and all seem to concentrate on the week before and the week after civic holiday there is for instance almost a complete shutdown of paper wholesalers ink and metal suppliers printing machinery dealers during these two weeks and many city printing firms are falling in line to make it a na- tonal holiday for all phases of printing the same goes for many other industries all concentrating on the same midsummer time the effect on resort operators is quite evident more bookings than they can handle for a few weeks and a recession in business the rest of the time and die farther the system is carried the tougher position the tourist business finds itself in a secondary con sideration is the clogging of highways with heavy traf fic for two or three weeks which will lead to more accidents and more damage to roads which are not de signed to takesuch traffic in bulk the time may come when the department of travel and publicity may have to make suggestions to industry for staggered vacations similar to the system in toronto where stores and business offices close at different times of the day to even out the rushhour traffic we cannot expect the best in tourist accom- modation if we do not give resort owners a fair oppor tunity to make a living v pot pourri nice to see vic mcniven up and around again vic was badly injured in an auto accident before christmas on the highway near victoria and spent many painful months in hospital at brampton it will e some time yet before he is completely recovered but just to be able to walk without a cane is a luxury albert hilts who injured his head in a fall several weeks ago is also home from hospital in toronto glancing through the aurora banner last week we noticed an interesting item about ab welk former manager of the bank of montreal here mr welk had the unpleasant experience of being roused from sleep in his apartment above the bank in the early morning by the ringing of the burglar alarm add to this the fact that the power was off at the time and two pro vincial policeofficers were standing at the foot of the stairway to die apartment and you can imagine mr welk s feelings it turned out that the newlyinstalled alarm must have been set off by heavy traffic for it is very sensitive and there had been no attempt at a ixeakin the holiday season is apparent on main s these days webbs bakery was closed for va cation last weekend mecjures home furnishings is taking mondays off all summer the law offices of dale tv bennett and langdon irk
