th georgetown herald wednesday july 19th 1950 i r t r the editors conner we reab the war news too it may aeem odd to readers that aa yet no cora- merit has been made on the world situation and the war irt jcorea it isnt that we do not share the common concern with events which are transpiring we admire the states or taking a firm stand against communist aggression we think of fine young americans who are being killed and crippled on a foreign soil which in itaef aeems hardly worth sayjng at times we wonder what will happen to our country should a dread third world war break out and earnestly pray that somehow the communist tide will be turned before millions of others perish we do this as arty thinking individual must but we donot put it into print because it is not the function of a weekly newspaper to attempt any coverage of c vent8 which do not directly concern- ther town and di- trier as one weekly edihjr hs so aptly put it if the city ofmontreal were to be completely destrpyed t b of nonewsinterestto us unless former townspeople were jiving there or relatives of local people were among the victims while this may souhd unusual coming from a newspaperman it is the only sensible approach that a weekly editor can make to the problem the dailies have the organization for reporting dominion and for eign events and even they miss out at times it would be no more sensible for the herald to cover the korean war or any other world event than for a local hotel to book in two thousand people for a convention one must stick to his own specialty and it is our specialty to report as accurately and as fully as possible all events which take place around georgetown or items about present or past georgetown people and believe us at times there arent enough hours in the day for even that a swimming pool maybe the lions club is talking about a swimming pool again the club has flirted with this idea for many years but nothing concrete has resulted this time it has reached the factfinding stage what would it cost where would it be how will the money be raised it is not yet a certainty that the club will embark on the project immediately but it is a good thing to have a plan and with school board chairman edwin wilson who has done such a good job of planning for the new school at the helm it is certain that the inestigation will reveal all the angles there are several possible locations for an outdoor pool the clubalreadyowns a lot on water street at present occupied by a lacrosse box having a pool in die park would have certain advantages locating one in the college view end of town would mean that less children wouioshave to travel further there is also the question of combining the idea with an indoor pool in the new public school that has advantages yearround use easier supervision bet ter cleanliness control it has disadvantages too people do not want to swim indoors in the summer time they want the sun and air you will hear more about the pool in the future this may be it or it may not it may be built next year or twenty years from now but it will be built for it is one big lack in a good town and it is a project which will have majority support potpourri bill hewitt who formerly worked at scott motors has joined the staff of barragers cleaners an unthinking person did considerable damage to windows on the lower west side of main street one evening last week when he walked along with a glass cutter jim goodlet who showed us the damage was one of the hardest hit and chances are he will have to have both windows replaced the damage is not too apparent to the eye but jim says that the weakened window is liable to cave in with heavy vibration painting and decorating andvremodelling is much in evidence on main street ted bludd has just finished doing four tore fronts owned by j j gibbens goldhams merv cooks lillicos and the rose bar grill the latter two in an unusual pink trim carrolls had a hamilton crew at work on monday garners the former mcbean tore have replaced cracked window glass and are working on the interior to give better display layout a nice sight for those who walk by the post office is the flower garden which caretaker alfrolfe has planted along the rear fence last year a row of trees was thinned out there and alfs flower garden is really lovely with zinnias petunias marigolds and other seas onal flowers and just so it isnt all for the eye we notice the odd tomato plant its a treat to drive to ballinafad now that the link between the village and no 7 highway has been paved should be good for georgetown stores too for it hasnt been a pleasant ride for people from that district we wont we sur prised at anything now when we find the odeon thea tre in brampton selling hot dogs good ones too we have read that in the states the theatres make more money from refreshments than they do from admis sions so guess the idea is spreading phyllis malcolm stewart daughter of mrs h m stewart of town play- v eda starring role in stepping sisters last week with the international players who perform in the lasalle hotel kingaton and got good notices in the toronto papers miss stewart role was that of an exburlesque queen who- had graduated toshakespearian spies and provided plenty ef opportunity for comedy speak ing of burlesque did you see those pictures of
