post office dap ottawa of the canadian weekly newspapers association andthe i ontarioquebec division of the cwha the editors cprner a vote of confidence executive members of the recreation cornmission will be pleased to learn that their work is not unapprec- iatedjy the electors of the town a two to one vote in favour of a 2500 fund grant next year shows that a good majority of ratepayers are in favour of the work done to date and are willing to place their confidence in the grc to carry on a program by ensuring public funds to guarantee the salary of a director i we cannot help but believe that the question would have carried with an even greater majority had the res ignation of rev j l sejf as director not become fcnown only asfew weeks before the vote mr self has been a tower of strength in all phases of grc work and it will be no small task to replace him it is at the same time a good thing that he announced his removal from town before the vote had this hews been with held there would have been natural doubt in councils mind whether ratepayers were endorsing the program itself or the program plus the man who guided it con fidence in the grc as an idea is strengthened thereby the recreation commission has beentnarking time until the vote was known no definite plans have been made for the hiring of a director to replace mr self there is a possibility that rather than hiring one director various jobs might be given to several lndiyi- duals there are advantages to be gained either way and the men and women who have worked hard for a successful program of recreation can be counted on to make the proper decision it will be in the best interests of grc activities if a decision can be made as speedily as possible in order that the program can carry on smoothly as it has in the past the anta claus parade in many years of operation the santa claus par ade sponsored by the lions club has become so well- known that it is scarcely necessary to outline its fea- tures however this year as in the past there are many new residents in town and a brief review of its purpose may be helpful j the main idea of the annual event which thisyear takes place next saturday is to provide entertainment for local and district children to be sure the parade is a small affair compared with that in the city but in the eyes of childhood santa claus is santa claus whether he is accompanied by bands expensive floats nursery rhyme characters and the expensive artistry of skilled designers or whether he comes in more humble garb one thing sure a bag of candies nuts and oranges personally handed to each child by santa himself is something which toronto cant equal all district children are welcomed on this annual visit each year the crowd seems to grow but there is always enough to take care of everyone there have been years when the club members had to dig into their own pocket to cover expenses but public response to sale of lucky draw tickets in the past few years has been generous and there has been a small surplus left to use for other public welfare projects the financing for purchase of treats for the chil dren and for the fowl and doll offered as prizes comes from sale of these tickets and it is hoped that the re sponse will again be generous this year remember your donations make santas visit possible 4 potpourri t too late for inclusion in last weeks paper came a letter written by gordon alcott whose work among local young people a few years ago is well remembered cord sent a plug for the grc fund vote pointing out that a director had plenty to occupy his time with the recreational program without the added burden of worrying about fund raising gordon now has a posi tion a recreational director for a large company in weston something of a sensation was created a few i ago in the states when a farmer noticed an ad vertisement for aircraft computers at 695 each in a war surplus sale not being certain of what they were but figuring they might bcvuseful on the farm so the story goes he ordered a dozen and was duly informed fthat he could pick up his purchase in a neighbouring hown to his surprise the computers turned out to be hugemachines which covered an acre of ground he tried to back out of his pojechase but the government department wouldnt refund him the purchase price so he finally had them shipped home at a cost of 4000 he later sold the machines back to the air force for 63000 their original cost was over a million dol lars the story came to light when a congressional investigation was ordered and we venture to say that the farmer will be found to have some friends on the inside somewhere the story is a bit tog big to swallow as is in the usual rush of seasonal advertising last week at4page paper wasnt big enough for all the news tuesdays council writeup had to be left for this week as well as several other news items steamers sports column was a casualty and an account of tues day founded by mr lac hun ter in 1865 was not the first newspaper printed in georgetown for several previous attempts had been made to establish papers here but they all proved inef fectual during the 28 prosperous and progressive career the equip ment of the herald office and the unusually neat typo graphical appearance orthe paper indicate enterprise and good management i the barber brothers these
