committee thee times3whire on our way home i set out to write this letter and each tim because of unfavor able travel conditions or other demands it was not completed xhe following gives some account of our journey taken mostly from these fragments written en route in a later letter i shall try to say more of the conditions of christian work in china spt 21 enroute to chungking s we are aboard the small steamer which plies the yangtse river be tween fowling and the larger centre of chungking bessie and i sit oahe backless benches provided for passengers while cathie two years old 1 runs about held by a harness for her safety ex- claiming on the passing boats and other items of scenery and enter taining the passengers who crowd every available space with a rather showoff performance of what a foreign child can do this morning we breakfasted at 230 am arrived at the river side at 330 got aboard after 5 and sail ed about 6 this is a typical rou tine but not a trustworthy one for boarding the boat if there is moonlight it may for instance leave without warning a couple of hours early since our baggage was put aboard yesterday we could take no chances and this time the long wait by the riverside was more than usually profitably since some chinese friends had come down to see us off so we are actually on our way home on furlough this after some indecision as to whether to go this fall or wait until early in 1951 however the reason for our not leaving when we were dye this spring had been the hope that a missionary might be gble to arrive k4 from canada to tawe our place ift there is no prospect of this now s for an indefinite period so we deci ded after consulting with the church people that there was not enough reason to wait longer beyond our usual time and io yesterday a farewell social was held in the fowling church exactly three yeavs to the day after they had held v welcome meeting for us on our arrival katurally it is with much feel ing that we leave china and fow ling in particular this city has been our home almost since we were married and the friendship and fellowship within the church there and inhe outlying towns and villages where there is chris- tlan work is such as only a com mon love lor jesus christ can in spire that fellowship is the same the world over eyen though cus toms history and political and economic conditions nre so differ ent we hope that after furlough we will be able to return china a arid indeed to fowling if synod so appoints us oct 1 in chungking slnce writ- lng the above i have had to make a trip back to fowling ayain somehow the preliminary papers we had been given thorc were in complete and i had to return to unwind the red tape as we should say we are now over that hur- die and all we have to do is wait lr few days or weeks till wegetour exit permits mea- whlle we have mtjny duties to at tend to and much repacking of ggnge since wqjeft easier than we had formerly plan hod v zuvct 8 we obtained our exit per- mlts then by good fortune our names canine up oh the waiting list title some day for boat tickets to illsiinikqlw we left on the 9th and alter passing through the beautiful vangtse
