kitchen committee mrs herb harlow sr mrs fred mccartney pianist mrs mary morrow this year once again the ladies of the auxiliary have had a very successful year it seems that each year they become a greater integral part of the branch once again they have aided the branch financially as well as catering to their various affairs at a verv low price indeed we wish the ladies all the success in the world in the future and are sure that they will take oust as much interest in the activities and welfare of branch 120 as they have in the past to make 1951 one of then most successful years refreshments were served at the conclusion of the installation and members enjoyed a social hour in last months legionary the national publication of the can adian legion in news of ontario branches we noted the following pertaining to a member of the ac ton branch among the many veterans who paraded to the cenptaph in acton on remembrance day probably none was more proud than j b chal mers who served in cuba in the spanishamerican war more than half a century ago he was sport ing a brand new war medal recei ved just a few days previously but awarded for service 52 years ago mr chalmers applied for the medal 30 years ago but it only arrived last november congratulatioi s to comrade chal mers j farm forums m middleman profits are exorbitant say farmers by mrs roy ellenton halton farm forums think the middleman makes exorbitant prof its at the expense of the producers of farm products reports received after the last broadcast on marketing indicated that most forums believe too large a share of profits goes to the mid dleman and that he is interested solely in sp the price as far as possible between th pr and consumer hornby forum pointed out that until farmers are able to handle their goods oh a cooperative basis the middleman is a necessity apple by forum said that the middleman serves his purpose in finding mar kets but should be held down to a fair profit says about twenty per cent several suggestions were made to help reduce the spread in price between producer and consumer ligny forum suggested the buying of grain directly from the producer and the elimination of brokers an- whats happening to the proposed dart tournament in the branch we haven t heard any thing about it lately better get a iove on fellows whats happened to the odd bits of news we used to get from the imperial section guess friend murphy has been taking a holiday on his job of reporting for them we regret that the idea of sending parcels to canadian soldiers serving outside the country and the us has not been functioning too well as yet the committee have things organized but it has been paffps other forum suggested proper pack aging bythe producer to save the- cost of repackaging and cooperative storing and marketing of produce questioned on what to do with low quality prod ace a variety of i answers were given someaow quality produce can be fed to stock or returned to the soil if it is marketed it should be graded and priced accordingly producers must be educated jo market only good produce as a protection to them selves and to the consumer and this can be done by settirig standard grades and rigidly enforcing their observance ligny forum expressed a desire s have ontario potatoes broug up to maritime standards by propafjjackaging mt nemo men tioned that surplus milk should be sent to a creamery rather than a lairy they also felt rriere would be less surplus milk if margarine was banned almost all english sparrows in canada aie descended from eight consols this letter was received from the w c macdonald co and we be lieve the other tobacco companies offer much the same deal we find that the boys ape gradually getting used to the key idea and no longer are using the bell to get in at first more mem bers were forgetting to bring their keys than were actualy using them this is one of the best ideas that ever came up in the branch it will prove its worth many times over and it also means less work for the steward and caretaker who before tha advent of the key system had to keep a very sharp eye out for unauthorized persons wandering in through the outside door into the television room and by that we dont mean that branch 120 doesnt like guests because they do and all members are urged to bring their friends in anytime they wish to see the television or play bil liards as long as they observe the rules and sign their guests ml what the executive and members object to is the habit of absolute strangers unaccompanied and unknown by any member wandering lh and us- 1ng the room this happily with the advent of the keys is pretty well a thing ot the past d6nt forget the monthly meeting to be held tomorrow night all members are urged to be pre sent f men who think of tomorrow practice moderation today the -house- of sleagr difficult fo obtain the names of those serving with the armed ser vices as yet we have had only three names turned in to the committee this in spite of the fact that all relatives and friends have been asked through advertise ments and this column to leave the names at the legion hall the herald office or dave bowman s empire lunch please folks how about a little help on this the legion hall seemed to be almost deserted on saturday main room with about twelve to fifteen in it and the television room deserted the reason quite a number of the boys went to the hockey game between walker- ton and georretown in wingham the dart tournament we men tioned that should be coming up is abourro start tonight we be lieve wondei which of the six teams entered will win the cham pionship this time heres something for treasu rer bill roney down in sunnybrook hospital to get a laugh out of it seems one of the local members was waiting to catch a bus in tor onto and as often happens struck up a conversation with another chap waiting when the conversa tlon came around to the inevitable where are you from and was told georgetown the other man remar ked that he was just out of hospi tal and did he know a bridge play- yer by the name of roney so we imagine you must be keeping your hand in down there bill we still have the odd re quest from members of branch 120- for information about senqing cigar ettes to members of the services we wrote to various tobacco com panies and this is
