disastrous consequences as most people know georgetowns water supply is obtained from a well which was drilled two years ago at the lower end of main street prior to that time water had come from springs which fed into a reservoir at silvercreek and thence by a gravity system to the town water mains when the new well was drilled it was decided to pump water into the reservoir from time to time and keep it filled as a supplementary supply on monday the town foreman turned on the pumps and was surprised after a few hours to find that pressure in the town system was practically nil he hur ried to silvercreek to investigate fearing that there was a major break in the system the reservoir was bone dry a closer investigation revealed that a padlock on a release valve had been broken off and the valve op ened wide as fast as water had been pumped into the reservoir it had run out it was a good two hours after the valve was shut- before the water level in the reser voir was normal as mr hyde reported to council the results could have been disastrous the factory district was almost without water at all had a fire broken out the pressure was so low that it is doubtful if firemen could have done anything at all the low pressure might also have done serious damage to boilers and air compressors in the factories we cannot believe that the person responsible could have thought for a moment of the consequences of such a foolish act it was not the work of youngsters be cause it is too difficult a job for a small child to turn the the valve the police are being asked to keep a watch on the reservoir property signs warning that there is no trespassing on the property will be renewed and coun cil is considering putting a gate across the roadway into the property it is reported that there is considerable traffic into the grounds and citizens are reminded that it is againsl the law iv gc n reservoir and that person yfz u6 so leave themselves open to prosecu tion wanted a lifeguard corporal joe mcbain head of the local opp de tachment is worried about the danger to children swim ming at the dam near the old paper mill on several occasions he has observed numbers of youngsters swimming where the water is fifteen feet deep with no adult supervision he wonders if there is not suirie local ui which would prov th necessary supervision to ensure the childrens safety the paper mill is one of the few places where lo cal children can swim and there is no necessity for ban ning it as a swimming hole but there is a real danger of a drowning accident when water is so deep a life guard in attendance at specified times would provide a real service to parents many of whom forbid their children to swim at the dam chatting with the chatting columnist away at the beach for a couple
