editor corner could we have a hospital the removal of brigadier wallace from town and advertising of his lovely maple avenue hbme for sale has brought to the fore the subject of a hospital there are many people in town who look on this as one of georgetowns greatest needs and several have been sug gesting that the wallace property would be an ideal site it is reasonable to think that as the town grows and it is growing the need for hospital facilities grows with it georgetown is at present served by three hos pitals peel memorial in brampton st josephs and guelph general in guelph until this past year accom- modation was extremely limited but this has been over come for the time being by additions to all three build ings even so one cannot be assured of proper accom modation in any of these one often hears of patients having their beds in tlyahallways or of patients who re quire private rooms being able only to have ward beds there are distinct advantages to a local hospital its purpose would best be served if it were planned for maternity confinements treatment of emergency oper ations such as appendectomies tonsil operations and care of elderly patients who require rest and quiet there is no great need for too elaborate operating room equipment for nowadays it is customary for specialists to be consulted in major operations and these patients would still go to the cities for treatment there would be saving in expense to the family both in accommoda- ton and in the visiting which is part of every hospitali zation case and in case of emergency valuable time would not be lost in transporting a patient several miles to hospital there are things to take info consideration too on the other side of the ledger not the least of these is cost original cost of equipping a hospital is high and it seems that no hosptal operates at a profit nor does it break even there is the question of whether any building can economically be converted into a hospital as there are certain requirements which might be met by law or whether it is cheaper in the long run to con struct a building from the ground up however on all these points expert advice should be obtainable from the government dozens of hospi tals have been opened in the last few years some of them new buildings some of them converted we would euggeat that some of those who are most interested in promoting a hospital call a public meeting and possibly have a government official address it nothing can be tltvfl umtlnmt gri nvh of groindwnr and nr cione wnnuui a gwiu mju p zation and the sooner it is started the sooner something concrete will result the ex is coming with its usual quota of features plus jimmy dur ante as star of the grandstand show the canadian nat ional exhibition is getting set vacations sonne welcome work is being done on sidewalks here and there in town one big improvement is the new curbing in front of the post office a doube curb allows a step vrhen getting out of a car eiminating the high approach to the side walk dick licata draws our attention to an item on the front page of the sunday edition ofhe detroit times which is probably the first time georgetown has been featured in that paper it tells of how bus bell tests his fibreglas boats and says occasionally he shoves a i 5ft boat out of a secondstorey window but instead of going crunch the boat bounces theyre plastic boats made of fibreglas bonded with synthetic resins he has government orders for several of the craft to be used in the arctic for they dont even get brittle at 80 degrees below zero frances
