the grc put of exist ence the ministers had agreed to lake their place but needed- funds to do so in answer to a letter sent to the bell telephone co objecting to the company increasing rates the company replied that the george town system is in good condition and good working order and that the service is the best that can be given with existing equipment the company requires more funds in or der to improve service in george town and without such funds the company is without means to make any improvements will charge st georges church the minimum water bill a letter from the church explained that not much water is used at the church and when the water meter reading of 105000 gallons was checked it was found that a pipe was leaking a letter from burlington which has already been published in the herald explained why that town is appealing the new county assess ment they claim to be over-asses- aed in comparison with other south halton municipalities a letter from milton saturday baseball church sport leader social and personal glen williams is mourning one of its most prominent citizens this week winston churchul wheeler died in st josephs hospital guelph on friday after several months of falling health he was 41 years of age win as he was familiarly known in the glen was born in glen wil liams and received his schooling there and at georgetown high schoolshe was a keen sportsman and during his residence in bramp ton where he was employed at the dale estate he pitched for the brampton hardball team he retur ned to glen williams in 1939 when he took a position at the alliance paper mills his interest in sports continued and he was a member of the championship glen fastball- team in 1948 he was popular with the young people always giving a help ing hand to organize activities for them he was a favourite chairman at the school christmas concerts church work took much of his time and at the time of his death he was superintendent of the sun day school at the glen united church and chairman of the board of stewards ill health forced him to give up his position at the pap- ermlll last spring and he had wor ked at the dominion seed house since then he is survived by his wife rena ridley whom he married in bramp ton in 1934 and one daughter gail a daughter carol anne died a week after birtb in 1947 he also leaves his parents john a wheel er promised in 1953 georgetown will have dial tele phones in 1953 announcement is made this week by the bell telephone company of the purchase of property on main street by the company it is the old ruston property on the corner of main and james streets vacant since the death of miss jessie rus ton two years ago the company plans to tear down the house and erect a new build ing to house the mechanical appar atus required for the new dial tele phone service w o misener district manager for the company states that this is the first visual step in that dir ection it will also be necessary to erect additional cable throughout the town and change all telephones both in town and in the country the amount of work necessary will take considerable time and it is hoped that materials will be avail able for all the work to be comple ted in 1953 residents of glen williams will have an added benefit from the new service for all telephones in that area will be converted to twoparty or private line service this was originally planned last fall but had to be abandoned at that time be cause of material shortages the company does not plan to convert these phones from rural lines now with the dial project definitely un derway but will do so when the changeover to dials is made breaks leg shoulder pinned by dump truck seriously injured in an accident on thursday oliver carey was rushed to guciph general hospital mr carey who works for lanes haulage was operating a dump truck at mr lanes quarry on the 6th line near limehouse backing the truck to the dump the load shifted to one side was the youngest son of the late maymon barnes and elizabeth wilson and was born in erin wj farmed for many years near geor getown selling out to russell hep burn in 1921 when he came to geor getown to take over the implement dealership he sold out several years ago to the late william mc millan and for the past few yean had been working with ken mc millan who now has the agency mr barnes belonged to knox presbyterian church where he be longed to the board of management he was thrice married his first wife being the late sarah bilton his sec ond wife the late lidia given and his third
