ontarioquebec division o the cwjja highway safety a new pamphlet issued by tlic deparl- ment of highways draws attention to the var ious highway nun kings and nigns which lie-nr- fit motorists much of the numerous signs which tell of urns slop highways schools speed limits etc is illustrated as well as the excellent marking system of clotted and solid lines on the pavement which indicates when it is safe lo pass iliis major development in highway safety lias made driving a real pleasure for il eliminates the hazard of hidden hills which has caused many accidents in the past it is simple to follow a single doited line in the centre of the road shows that it is safe to pass in cither direction if unsafe a solid line is ad ded on the drivers side and if there is danger in both directions a double solid line replaces the single dotted line perhaps one further improvement could be made the hidden hill menace exists on eveiy highway those short dips in the rood which sometimes arent visible to the eye until one is well out in the passing lane we suggest that the highways department place hidden hill signs on both approaches lo warn motorists another safety improvement needed in many places is the placing of slop highway signs on secondary roads sulf icienlly lack from the intersection to give plenty of warn ing to come to 1 stop in many places these signs are placed right at the intersection and when travelling at the legal limit of m miles an hour it is impossible to stop in time hie road which runs from uallinafad through hlllsburgh to the orangcvillearthur high way is a good example of this it crosses two stop highways one on either side of i fills- burgh and in neither case is sufficient warning given to motorists to come to a full stop our highways good and bad driving up to bruce county a couple of times recently we were struck by the lack of conformity on ontario highways we have all typea good and bad scattered here there and everywhere and in no place is any one high way good enough to take the tourist from one place to another without cursing under his breath take the trip we make to lnverhuron beach as an example there is n good stretch of road along the arthurorangeville high way until one gets around hnmston here there are miles of road which have gone to pieces and is in process of repair though it looks like an allsummer job from mildmny to walkerton the road surface is good though the highway is narrow hilly and windy and once one gets behind a slow car it is almost impossible to pass and still observe safety rules from walkerton to kincardine exten sive resurfacing is being done the second summer that this highway has been cut up and been a nuisance to travellers an alternate routes lake us through mount forest durham and hanover to walkerton here there is a beautiful stretch of highway from arthur to mount forest then an old stretch to durham and another beautiful stretch from durham to hanover we know thai it costs money o lot of money to keep roads in good shape but surely when we cater so much to tourists there should be some consistency in our highway development it is human nature always lo remember the bad things you can drive ninety miles on a good road and ten miles on a bad and if someone asks about the trip its the ton miles you tell them about if enough money is available to fix all our highways the way they should be it might be better lo concentrate on one ut a time put in one decent road leading from one point to another then when it is done go to work on the next the mixing of good and bad satisfies no one stjgoracgc t 18521952 cbtttjin tljcsc toads itl lolr ptiut 3nb lobe unto concorb btocll bjtrr qior tljt trouble conscience ease vtrjt uiounbtb spirit ikhi have your sssp oil
