ontarioquebec division of the cwna an interesting trip were always at a loss to know what to aay in the paper after attending a newspaper convention heretofore we have left it to hatting to tell of places visited and sights seen but chat ting seems to lie busy these days with such mundane dungs as diapers and baby booties and kids going to school and for the present we arc without a columnist and just when we thouglit we could give some different slants on the eastern part of the dominion wc picked up a copy of maclean s and find that air wr learned and then some has ust wn told by a magazine writer so for the factual material on st an drew s by t liesea we ii refer you to said mag azme and tell only briefly about the trip our jaunt to new brunswick took us to montreal then by special train overnight to this little vacation town of 1 400 the canadian puc ific railways which provided the train trea ted the newspapermen royally and made one think briefly that we were much more impor tant than we are a real maritime reception greeted us as we embarked in the early morning after sleep ing our way through two provinces and one state part of the trip is through the north em tip of maine st andrew s was blanket a shore dinner highlight of the convention from an en tertainment standpoint was a shore dinner we watched in fascination as hotel cm ployees carefully prepared a bed of coals at least a foot deep covered this with tin then crumped wriggling lobsters on the tin packing them in wet seaweed another tin topped them with clams treated in the same fashion and soon the main course was ready we couldn t allow ourselves to dwell too long on trre lobsters fate it was our first meeting with lobsters in the raw and we still prefer the quieter kind that come quite dead in cans incidentally st andrew s ships live lobsters to all parts of canada and chances are if you eat a meal in a toronto restaurant the delicacy you enjoy will come from there the lady of the party got her biggest thrill from a deep sea fishing trip we didn t go as there was an important business session that morning which wc didnt want to miss yes we do like attending the sessions at n convention ed in fog and even the hotel rotunda with a blading fireplace was damp and cold and un pleasant it did give us however a free af ternoon to chat with old friends ana meet new ones in the newsiprr fiaternity and the fog lifted early enough in the afternoon for us to walk down to the cuay aissl see the ijay of i undy it low tide we chatted with a flahrr in in who was most obliging in telling us how lobsters were trapped and tfxjut fishing for herring the two main mdiittnrs in that part of new brunswick i he algonqiun i lotel in all that one might cxect of a luxury hotel plentiful meals an air of quirt elegance comfortable rooms so arrangrd that almost every one has a superb view of the bay i he town is obviously gear ed to the double atmosphere of vacationers and wealthy summer residents stores carry delicacies never found in ordinary small towns and there is a preponderance of gift shops we talked with the proprietors of the sri cap tains shop and found that they originally came from hamilton 1 hey open the store for four months then spend the rrst of the year shopping in canada and the stites for goods for the next season mils is typical of st andrew s stores she didn t catch an thing but like all good fishermen she got a lot of bites one chap in the boat caught a squid and we arc waiting for films to prove it only good catch we heard about in the newspaper party was a ten pound cod caught by the son of the cobourg publisher we suggested to the young lad that he could make a good thing of it by rent ing it out for pictures for there were many envious glances wc ve heard stories about people getting into the wrong berths and now wc know they are true on the trip down we stayed up a little later than the ladies for a bull session in the smoker a piercing scream at the far end of the car broke up the meeting sure enough a gentleman from the west had got his ends mixed and thinking he was climbing into his own lower found it was already occupied by a lady some sidelights our own little kick was a swim in salt water we ve never been known as a strong awimmer but believe us those stories of swim ing in aalt water are true we made like john ny weismuller about twenty yards out to a float and instead of the usual gasping for air felt so good we turned around and swam back to shore never got back to prove it wasnt a fluke because the weather was too nippy the next day but someday were going back to the sea and have a real swim then thqre was the editor from alhston who has the gift of writing backwards this gentleman can take a pencil in either hand and write any given sentence properly with the right and backwards with the left at the same time we suggested that he learn to write two lorne garner motors acton
