v high tales pubushed by students of georgetown high school farm news caterpillar blight continues this summer time 1 no is georgetown ontario wednesday may 20 1953 ranee bursaries scholarships l stone scholarships and silver bursaries were i two weeks ago by prin- lamtaerc these generous should be very irrflu- ln helping students to get yi mitverpty the scholarships bursaries are a shining exam- cooperation between indus- land education ly two weeks stay now weeks from now the lower final exams will be begin on june 8th grade xl along some other classes have still work to cover before the will be over and many stud- are beginning to feel the l the staff have quite a r with the amount of work to be covered and examina- i to be set however this may last year that the staff will shorthanded as a new teacher added to the staff in sep- ter the new addition to the will not be ready till sep- sr 1954 and some of the clas- will probably have to be held t attic as all possible space is used for classes now except oiler room choir report bev hyde be choir concert is over and have started to settled down at once again the choir con- was fairly well appreciated s people who came to hear us everything went fine un- came to begin the beguine then the fun began first the inos did not come in at the time then the mezzos the altos did not come in at but that was just the begm- j to top it all off the music choir leader was conducting fell on the floor there was e a dither about this and a few had to let everyone know lt had happened by giggling the fiof the way through the song other than that the concert off quite well classes are over for this and we have big plans for year after a 15 minute per- i of music consisting of a few b screams and giggles we went i cadet period in which we volleyball please dont i this last paragraph the wrong life at qhs is hardly ever this is the last report for this and all i can say is that its fun getting my report in ten late and watching our ed- itear out his hair editorial don souther for many students college means one thing the need for money students have in many cases to pay their own way wrn they get to college the financing of such a big venture takes some tactf ulness the average pupil is able and will ing to work for what he or she wants but the question is where to get work there are plenty of jobs if a person can find them but doing it by yourself is a big job the student saving for a university education has a tough row to hoe if he cannot find a suitable job in the summer to build up bis finances if there was a committee or board made up of students and members of the town council or others and a representative of the major in dustries in town who could find and ararnge summer jobs for stud ents wishing to go on to uni versity it would help greatly this board could choose jobs specially suited for certain students the prospective employer could contact this committee and doubtless the committee could find the student best suited for the job when stud ents had the money they would be more inclined to continue their ed ucation knowing that they had a good start on financing such an im portant venture this committee could probably place most of the students who wanted summer work as a committee contacts could be made all over the country where jobs could be found this com- mjtfee along with proper guidance could no doubt raise the percen tage of students wishing to go to university or its equivalent misunderstanding i our last edition it was stated sgt teeter had been replaced it is now reported that he still l the cadets on tuesday nights i not at ghs cadet news views ross mogilvray last minute preparations and re hearsals for the annual cadet in- spection on may 26th are been a great pleasure to write the cadet column and i certainly hope that next year a bigger and better paper will again be issued 1 sin cerely think that it will be just as successful or more so in the term to come now to exams new school is stuck in the mud progress on the plans of tiic now addition to georgetown hiijh school socm to have bogged down the architects have been working on plans but they still have- lo be ac- luted by the school bojki jnd then by the department of educi- tion things arc not moving as fast as possibl toward getting a new addition many had hoped to see the final approved plans being put into action now but as it is that is a long way off the red tape is one cavise of the delay and also the general indecision of ev erybody on what we the students are to get but we can only hope for some quick action soon 9b report terry hurley ghs has been out to set all of records the cadets are to get the no 1 position in rio the track and field stars i meeting at ontario for several years this year it is expected to be ser- ious in the georgian bay and eastern ontario areas in particular and osstbly in some areas farther north says prof k w goble provincial entomologist department of ento mology and zoology oac this type of caterpillar does not build a tent it will migrate from tree to tree often stripping the leaves from the broadleaved trees in an area this type will be pres ent in some of the applegrowing areas and in such areas it may be necessary to spray the fence rows as well as the orchards in order to prevent migration to the trees the eastern lent caterpillar on the oher hand does build a tent and will be quite plentiful in many sections of southern ontario this year the caterpillars hatch the end of april and by the middle of may small tents have been for med which will increase in size as the caterpillars grow and will be conspicuous by june this type will not migrate from tree to tree and will feed only within a yard or two of the tent returning to it each night this type will be found mostly on wild cherry apple hawthorne plum and to a lesser degree on other shade trees it does not attack the evergreens these tents will be unsightly al ong roadsides on neglected apple plum and cherry trees but are not likely to cause great damage in those places in which these caterpillars have been present for two or three years they may n6t be serious this year in places in which they were present for the first time last year they are likely to be present this year the para sites attacking these caterpillars usually lake two or three years to bring an infestation under control ornamental and shade trees and shrubs around the home may be protected from either type of cater pillar by spraying with orchard type equipment the nests of the eastern tent caterpillar may e de stroyed by cutting off the infested branches in the cvenini or burning them or by burning the tents in the evening by means of a torch for the foicsl
