the ontarioquebec division of the cwna we too can celebrate searching for a proper post coronation editorial a rural reader whose letter appears in another sectibn of the paper gave us the cue the clipping which was enclosed from the globe mail so aply fitted that we are tak ing the liberty of reproducing it in its entirety we share the city paper s sentiments with one proviso two parades so close together would not work in a small town we suggest that plans be kept in mind for 1 954 dominion day here is what the globe says canadians made a big display of patriot ism on coronation day and they enjoyed it thoroughly with flags and fireworks hymns and hot dogs speeches and street dances they told the world about their affection for the crown in general and queen elizabeth in par ticular even the tiniest communities arran ged a program of some sort while the large ones staged services and spectacles which must have run into many thousands of dollars the biggest show was in ottawa where seven thousand troops and thousands more spectators gathered on the great green lawns in front of the parliament buildings to hear an address by the governor general and witness a flying display by the royal canadian air force here in toronto brilliant weather brought out big crowds to services at the city hall and on the university campus the col orful garrison parade which followed the lat ter service was seen by 1 00 000 people in the suburbs there were massed choirs track meets treeplanting maypoledancing and a host of other festivities so it went across the nation proving if proof were needed that the people of can ada are deeply attached to the crown and commonwealth it proved something else that they know how to celebrate an historic occasion this being so why don t they do it more often specifically why dont they stage shows like this on their bfg national hoi idays like dominion day if canadians ob served that day every day as they observed coronation day this year the canadianism we hear so much about these days would be a great deal stronger the people of the united states set great store by their fourth of july and they are right they know that is why the coron ation fascinated them that tradition is the hfeblood of nations that one which neglects its past neglects its future from them from the british and from our own enthusiastic ob servation of the queen s ascent to the throne we should recognize the importance not to mention the satisfaction of colour and cere mony fcmnting and bugles just four weeks from now it will be dominion day it is time enough for canadas communities to arrange something much bigger and better in the way of celebrations than they have had in years past something more like the ones they en joyed so greatly last tuesday i
