tabbftan si i presbyterians st johns unite for august services j d a sunday morning service at st johns united church was the last for rev john m smith until aug ust is over and so we wish for him and his fainily a very pleasant and restful holiday for ills text on sunday he took the words of fcbe psalmist thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path the psalmist knew the value of light tft his day as we do in ours crude and tiny though his was a small vessel of oil with a small piece of wick burn ing in it but even that was suffi cient to banish some of the fear and loneliness and even some of the discouragement and despair which darkness brings of intensifies and the psalmist knew there was much moral and spiritual darkness in the world which needed light as much as the physical darkness and he knew from what he had learned from even the small por tion of god s word available to him in his day coupled with learning from the prophets and he testimony of men of god that in these he had a lamp to guide his feet and a light to show his path and though we save a great deal more light of every kind in our day much more of gods word and a greater knowledge of him thru the life and teachings of jesus there is still much darkness in the world which will only be dispelled when we heed the statement of the psal mist and see that the word of god and the knowledge we have of his love and mercy be used as a lamp and carried into all corners of the earth to guide and light the way out of this darkness or as the small boy put it as he entered a dark room with his mother mother put out the dark and what does god s word show us first it makes us aware of our selves if we read it thoughfully it will show us the kind of person we are alongside of the kind of person we could be even should be robably quite different fromathe kind of person we thought we were we would never think the par able of the prodigal son could be for us yet have we not often was ted our father s gifts and hurt him by staying away from him and god s word makes us aware of oth ers without it we very largely think we have to look out for our selves reading it we learn we have a care and responsibility for others too that we cannot live to ourselves albne we cannot pass by on the other side without hurt to ourselves and to god and his cause man has to learn to love his enemies they too being god a children hard though that msy be also that blessed are the peace makers man has his part in bring ing that about and then god s word often read leads man to an awareness of god and only those who have experien ced that awareness like the psalm ist can know how much that means the value god places on his life the light through darkness and lon- llness the comfort in sorrow the rest in weariness the security in despair and discouragement the sat isfaction and joy in his service our world needs all the light of guid ance it can get so use god s word and in this world is darkness so let us shine you in your small corner and i in mine and duet the mrs h c wrigglesworth mrs e g bishop sang as a the holy city mrs r h wright was at organ the first three sundays in aug ust light unfortunately for many peo ple still god s word as contained in the bible is as an old out of date little used oil lamp stored in a back cupboard and only on occasion of extreme urgency is it brought out to see if some dim lignrt may be forthcoming how wonderful it would be if the word of god in the bible were for us as a much used and efficient trl light lamp first lighting up the dark places of our own inner lives second lighting up the path in the midst of llfes problems third lighting the whole of life with the radiance of christ himself the true light of the world a panel
