halton county magistrate and j a willoughby and sons and th desire of these men to have the willoughby golf course made available to chose locally interested negotiations for the purchase of j a willoughby golf course as a going concern have been concluded by kenneth m langdon the purchase has been brought about as a result of the enthusiasm of a number of local citizens who are anxious to cee the club in oper ation while mr langdon has com pleted the purcbase he intends to turn the property over to the club now being formed and its members will be the sole owners kmce the mortgage and commit- ments have been paid the prop- i erty consisting of 127 acres in cludes a nme hole golf course which mr willoughby created on the property in 1919 his own large summer home three cottages and the together with all the fur- nishlngs and equipment mr wil loughby is retaining a two acre plot of land adjoining the summer home of dr c h best on which he contemplates constructing a summer home which will overlook the golf course the arrangements for financing the club by selling preferred shares and yearly fees will result in the members owning the property at the expiration of ten years the property will only accommodate a limited number of members and for this reason the membership is to be restricted to 400 in the for mation of the club the directors have been selected to represent all the areas of north halton and the first board already named includes kenneth m langdon president james linton vice president ernest h batkln sectytreas victor b rumley charles kirk- ness wesley and it is expected that if it is not fully subscribed by this date the area will be enlarged the purchase of the willoughby prop erty makes golfing available to lo cal people for the first time since the club was closed down in 1940 since that time the course has been kept in operating condition and the members of the willoughby fa mily and their friends have made constant use of it full details of membership application appear in an advertisement elsewhere in this issue it is recommended that local peo ple interested in golfing should be sure that their applications are in by 15th october club membership fees have been sec at 150 for hus band and wife and 100 for single membership a fee of 10 will be charged for dependent children of members excellent locker room facilities dining room and snack bar are contemplated there is ample room in the clubhouse for a lounge tor dancing and cards trout ponds on the property may be stocked at a later date if members desire to include fishing in their program it is mr langdons desire that the forming of this club will provide facilities for the children for skat ing skiing swimming and riding this should be an opportunity for the various service clubs in town to cooperate with the members to make the best possible use bf these facilities the new golf club will be an as set to georgetown providing rec reational facilities which few towns possess the weather mr editor those temperatures in the low 70s make one ieel good after nine consecutive days of 90 or more the last days of august in the 90s made the average maximum for august 3 degrees above the normal average the minimum avf- erage this august was 55 which is exactly normal the heavy rains during the first week of august brought the total for the month to 410 party at which mrs kel ly was presented with an electric blanket and a number of other gifts mrs kelly is a native of camp bells cross the former anna lou ise victoria campbell daughter of scottish settlers who gave the ham let its name she spent her mar ried life there and in muskoka and norval and lived in orangeville for a time after her husbands death in 1925 she is the youngest and last brooklin this friday and a return match here next wednesday georgetowns victory is notable when it is realized that wallace burg have been provincial champs for two years running it is quite a feather in the iap of a brand new team to- advance this far in the first year and harks back to the day of the championship teams at the turn of the century which spread georgetowns name far and wide after in this district at the height of a severe electric storm friday arthur ruddclls large barn on the 7th line went up in flames after being struck by light ning about the same time eight cattle huddled under a tree on dan mccallums faim were lightning v ictims sunday at the supper hour fire ot undetermined origin destroyed three barns and some smaller build ings at murray iairds farm at the top of norval hill mr and mrs ruddell heard the fatal bolt which struck their barn and hurried to investigate when the lights flickered out a few mom ents later the barn was a mass of flames soon aitei though neigh bours who rushed to the scne were able to help save the milking equip ment and some smaller equipment the new georgetown fire area truck used for the first time al ong with the milton truck is credit ed with saving the house from the- flames firemen also managed to save a large gas storage tank from exploding by dousing it with wet blankets both trucks were needed as gcorgetomn had almost pumped the ruddel cistern dry and a relay system was set up with milton pumping from a pond across the road and relaying this to the geor getown truck a dense traffic jam might have what council did on tuesday september 8th unit for consideration heard a request from vem craw ford of saxe motors asking permis sion to take the south end off the bridge on guelph street next to his garage- in order that he might have better access to his gas pumps mr crawford has to move his pumps to the side of the building due to highway regulations and council could see no reason for not on saturday morning eight cattle were found dead under a tree at mr mccallums property killed by a bolt of lightening mr mocallum owned one cow jim stark was owner of four head and cecil chlsholm owner of the other three question transient suspicious circumstances surroun ding the laird fire led to the appre hension of an elderly vagrant and his arrest on a vagrancy charge a short time after the man had begged a number of newspapers at a norval service station the fire broke out arid two young boys be lieve they saw him leaving the scene of the burning barn the transient had been around
