end the ontario division of the c wna lacrosse to the fore a remarkable record has been chalked up by georgetown ngs in winning an ontario lacrosse championship in their first year as a team and our hats are off to them in these days of imports even in ama teur sport it is refreshing too to know that all the players on the team are natives of geo getown and district something which few on tario champions in any branch of sport can claim not being a lacrosse expert we can only pass on the word of some who know when they say that the team played a good clean brand of lacrosse and deserved their win while the players can rightfully take the lion s share of credit there are others whose equally important work behind the scenes stood the team in good stead a special medal should go to tom haines who with brother roly sparked the organization and raised the funds which because gate receiptswere much below expectations were so important to the golf club big news formation of north halton qolf and country club at the former willoughby prop erty has turned out to be the biggests news of the year in georgetown never have we noticed so much com ment on any single activity in town and since the announcement of the property purchase by k m langdon and the offering of shares to the public early last month there is scarcely a day goes by that someone does not mention golf over the herald office counter pot pourri at least one local resident is following the news of communist trouble in british guiana with more than passing interest roxy theatre manager bill leslie lived there before coming to canada and says he could see trau ble coming several years ago demonstra tion of fire fighting by the local brigade show ed public school students last week how dif ferent types of fires can be fought and how it is not only water that is used in modern fire fighting itiis was one practical way that the brigade marked fire prevention week ano ther activity was inspection of business prem 18cb and recommendations for safety meas ures which arc alwiys welcomed by merch tints nature gav us one of the most glor jous th inksgiinj w i k nds yet and this year t timing wimd reporting when wc retur iixa jh6i week 111 spite of 14 pages there wu so muii rfdvrrtibing that nvre wasn t room for all the news plus editorial so we thought it btter to concentrate on the week s welfare of the team like any other sport lacrosse costs money especially when com peting teams are so far away and long trips to sarma and wallaceburg not only imposed a handicap on the players but dug deeply into the club treasury as well there were many who helped men like jack harrison and wilf breen who acted as trainers timekeeper tom beckett jack wil son clark lyons and of course coach benny harris there were several who loaned their cars for trips too all in a spirit of cooperation and there were merchants who helped sponsor the team by buying equipment and going back even farther perhaps we should give a bouquet to men like rev len self now of midland and jim clark to mention only two whose efforts a few years ago with teams at norval developed most of the players who this year brought george town a championship this week the deadline for making the club a closed corporation to georgetown and district expires over half of the 225 mem bership shares available have been subscribed and it is now the intention of the directors to seek the rest of the membership over a wider area as definite financial commitments with mr willoughby have to be met if any local person intends to join and has not yet been in touch with the secretary we would advise them to delay no longer news budget it was a nice tribute that the toronto telegram paid to those who lost their lives in the war in korea the paper devoted the entire front page second section to a euf ogy naming each soldiel who died on the bat tlefield it was particularly noted locally be cause two names were familiar here ken nor ton and ron edmunds local pool room proprietors may well take exception to tor onto argonauts coach trank clair who says more kids are interested in being poolroom johnnies than in working toward football car eers a pro football career is only one way of life and while we hove admiration for those who reach the heights there is no more pride in a man excelling in a sporting career than a successful profession or trade per haps it is unfortunite that so much emphasis ii placed on athletics as compared to other car fs lvcry man has his place in life and there c m ik just aa much satisfaction in being i good doctor carpenter papcrmaker or pnn tc r ih tlit r can be in being a footballer as fur rcereation playing pool is a pastime just as is bowling e irds and dancing and we think mr clair used an unfortunate simile- whexi he singled out poolrooms to use in a derogatory sense we can say that georgetown pool rooms are certainly no dens of iniquity and provide a dc
