provincial and canadian champion ships is the first tractor plowing champion of the world in fact so modest is james ec cles 34 of norval about his plow ing abilities that he was not in tending to enter this year s ontario plowmen s association internat ional match at all he did so at the last minute only at the urging of close friends for the first two days of the four day plowing match eccles trailed behind 26 year old robert timbers of stouffville who came in ahead of him to win the ontario and the canadian championships but din ing the last two days when the world classes were held it was a different story eccles was almost the last man to get started but when the final score was announced he had beaten competitors from ten other coun tries and bob timbers as well timbers placed third in the world class both eccles and timbers are past winners of the esso transatlan tic class and have made the six- weeks trip to great britain and europe to compete in plowing mat ches there bob timbers was sil ver medalist in the esso trans- auantlc in 1948 and jim eccles was gold medalist in 1949 they will both compete in the second world match to be held in europe early next fall they will travel as guests of imperial oil eccles who has been match plow lng for 19 yean is the first winner of the esso golden plow the world championship trophy he had three latin american buyers
