and the christian churches are tall- lng again the christmas story this was sq at st johns united church last sunday and the rev john m smith told the girls and boys the story of a carol a long time ago in another land minister joseph mohr watched the christmas story being enacted simply and sincerely by a group of people and was so impressed that instead of going home he climbed the hillside and found a quiet spot where he could meditate with the moon and stars shining bright from the beautiful words of the stjiry and of the night came to him he reached his home he wrote them down next morning he showed them to his organist franx schubert who liked them so much he wrote a beautiful melody for them which was practised and then sung at the service on the following sunday it was so loved it was sung in neigh bouring towns and spread to other lands now it is sung at christmas time throughout the christian world and is probably the best- loved of all silent night holy night all started from a simple sincere portrayal of the christmas story mr smiths sermon was share the joy from the text unto you is born this day a saviour and the translated text we should not forget to do good and to share our good tidings with others a beg gar sat at a church gate long long ago and asked for money from two christian worshippers about to enter he probably had more money in his pouch han these two strangers to him for one of them turned to him and said silver and gold have i none but such as 1 have give i unto thee in the name of jeus christ of nazareth rise up and walk peter was willing to share the good tidings of jestfs which he had but he didnt stop at that he took the beggar by the right hand and lifted him up anjjl all three of them peter john and the beggar went into the temple together praising god an old bible story you say true it is but how much these old bible stories have a habit of repeating themselves coming to life in some form or other down through the years quite often in spirit more often than we maybe think very very similar in the deed itself it is about 1950 years since the christmas story was first told yet still each year we retell it and often in its spirit of love peace and goodwill which it brought to our world often do we reenact it thus as each christmas rolls ar ound remembering to do good and share its glad tidings if there had not been that first christmas we could still have been in the far country or if someone like peter and john had not brought it to us we could have been some thing like the beggar without the good news but we have the glad tidings as christians we have vow ed our belief in them and can join with our fellows in worship and in praising god but how about the sharing of our joy there must be many who do not have it this christmas and are probably look ing to us for it if we can do our sharing ourselves personally as pe ter did taking them by the right hand end liftingthem up entering the temple withjpiem and praising god then qut cup of joy will be full ilrwe cannot share like that let us at least remember jesus words inasmuch as ye have done it yes even if we do it through others who are in touch with the needy and so can help us to do our sharing of our joy wisely and well he will accept and bless it as be ing done unto him the anthem by the choir was the moon looks down on bethlehem the junior choir sang the carol ding dong merrily on high thesubject of the evening ser vice was what is religion rev j m smith pointed out that man is essentially a religious creature with a mind to is my relation to others and to these things about me and in seeking an answer he found he lived in a world where there was a power at work beyond himself and against which he could not cope and represented to him at first in the thunder and lightning the sun moon and stars the growth all about him his sense and in tuition caused him to try and plac ate this power or god to do all he could to placate it in sacrifice and offering and in living so as to keep in its favour religion came from mans aware ness of this great power and his acknowledgement of it and is real ly mans response to it in worship in obeisance and in part in a creed by which to describe it and pass it on to others and at knowledge and experience has been added down through the ages man has learned more and more that there are many interpretations of reug- ipnwith much good in all of them it is the christian religion in which we believe that the one god of love and power revealed to us by jesus la the one the
