matters lie sometimes the status- quo is a good thing and refemng to downtown parking we cant see any point in shifting the present situation until a handy municipal parking lot is provi ded as an alternative to the present parking locations on main street periodically the matter of enforcing 2- hour parking pops up in council sometimes via an individual councillor sometimes indirectly from merchants and monday directly by a merchant group who spoke through the cham ber of commerce despite strong representa tion council declined to act on a suggestion for strict enforcemertt of the by law but will give consideration to adding parking facilities on townowned land on james street merchants cannot be too annoyed at failure to deal with a problem which many merchants themselves aggravate any day in the week one con look along main street and see car after car owned by merchants par down in the dumps the park dump has been overflowing its boundaries for some years now and while no active complaint has been laid by owners of neighbouring property it is known that they do not look with too much favour on the encroachment periodically residents in the park district particularly those along maple avenue com plain about the odour when garbage is burn ed and anyone who drove out that way a week ago last night would realize why pre vailing winds seem to favour wafting the smoke in that direction and on this particular tuesday the smoke was so dense that one could scarcely see the houses driving by and in fact we had to stop the car at one point and wipe the sting from our eyes the garbage question is one which will ked in places which should be reserved for customers we have been guilty on occasion too for it is human nature to do the easiest thing and unless one keeps the buying public in mind constantly a main streeter slips into the old habit of parking as close as possible to the front door of his business place we cant be too optimistic about how many people will use a parking lot on james street and wouldnt advise council to spend too much money on a project which might be- a white elephant meanwhile anyone who habitually parks in a shopping location for long stretches of time might try to change his habits in the interest of public welfare rem embering that although the bylow will not be strictly eriforced it still exists and parking tickets are still handed out on occasion literally and figuratively council is down in the dumps these days with garbage disposal again a pressing question never have a perfect solution for whatever and wherever garbage is disposed there will be neighbours to complain but the question seems to be resolving itself into elimination of an open dump and disposal by burying or incinerating council has given no senoun thought to an incinerator for the cost of thu is excessive for a town of georgetowns size there has been some consideration of burying garbage either by dumping in large ravines and covering periodically or by a method de monstrated jiere last week where a bullclam machine compacts refuse and covers it in one operation the latter is somewhat more ex pensive but has an added advantoge of creat ing useful land for parks playgrounds and other municipal purposes pot pourri an error in compiling high school results which appeared in last weeks herald placed sandy mackenzie eleventh place in grade xi rather than in seventh sandys mark of 70 in german was not included in the marks pub lished keith barber is now employed at the local customs office as assistant to an dy gnchton who was promoted to col lector when bill matthews was transferred to the brampton office a tulip tree at the home of cyril brandford on guelph street is an unusual horticultural specimen and mr brandford believes that it is one of a very few in canada the huge tree was on the proper ty when he pur hosed it several years ago and is so tall that die effect of the exotic blossoms is lost unless one particularly looks up when passing the evening we examinnd it mr brandford climbed up on the roof and snipped one of the hundreds of blooms which some what resemble orchids walter sargent will put his training a ryerson i to good use when he takes over as editor of the man- itoulin expositor at little current while the publisher is away his wife is joining him there for the ummer correcting an error in chapel street school results lynda whit- mee received honours in her grade 8 work her name appeared last week in the list of pass graduates an amusing incident when senior pupils of chapel street school took their trip to niagara was when they clean ed out a confectionery truck which appeared as they stopped for lunch the truck served hydro workers who must have been hungry that day for the children completely bought out everything eatable though we werent here to witness it we hear that georgetown was bombed saturday with blue and white streamers giving a real modern touch to one of the days weddings death of john nick- ell last week at eden mills removes another link with pioneer days for he was the last of a family whose name was associated with lime- house since the early days he was perhaps best known for his fiddling and played for his first dance at age 1 4 and his last when he was 83 and treasured many medals won in com petition
