the mayors belief that such a board should come from outside the council leaves it squarely to the people a planning board could fulfill an impor tant function locally providing its members are carefully chosen and providing they are of a temperment winch can stand criticism for a planning board worthy of its salt must make recommendations which do not always meet with favour from all ratepayers there are such things as zoning bylaws refusal to allow subdivisions on certain prop erties limiting districts to onefamily dwel lings creation of through traffic streets faithful service ending when archdeacon w g o thompson preaches his last sermons this sunday in georgetown and glen williams he will be ending what is possibly the longest term of service of any clergyman in one local church it is with a mixture of happiness and sadness that the town greets the event it is always hard to see a man retire from work to which he has devoted his life and it particu- which he has devoted his life and it is particu larly hard to say goodbye to a couple who getown affairs within and without their church for almost a quarter of a century and yet it is nice to know that the archdeacon is retir ing at a time when he enjoys good health and can look ahead to years when he can spend leisure hours in ways of his own choice free pot pourri mr and mrs jack polly while visiting one day last week with mrs arthur reeve renewed acquaintances made along main st when jack was roxy theatre manager here they are living in toronto and jack has been employed at malton avro for several years daughter susan and son michael born since they left town were with them mac her- rington is the new junior on the hydro staff mel spence who worked for dominion stores m collingwood when he first left town has switched chains and is now with die lob- laws store there time passes quickly and those who remember when cec dobie was ac countant here prior to getting the manager ship at the milton bank of commerce can hardly believe that son david is now grown up and has joined the mounties three which have caused flurries of controversy in other growing towns it would take a tough planning board and an even tougher council to deal with questions winch might arise and as the town grows in population the need for such things increases in proportion and every delay in planning makes it harder for a board to act whent it is established as it is improbable that any group of citizens will be offering their services in this capacity we think the problem devolves to council who in a general woy have expres sed themselves favourable it is up to them to find the proper personnel to serve george town in such an important post and to pro vide the impetus for formation of a planning board of the multitudinous duties of the active min istry and the calls on his tune which come at all hours because they have been such good citi ens and because their work and friendships embrace a much wider field than the anghoin community we expect that saturday s recep tion will see scores of friends outside the an glican church calling to pay their respeots and to wish them happiness in their future home in st catharines they will leave with the knowledge that their contributions here to such organizations as the school library iode lions club leg ion and masonic lodges plus their labours at st georges will keep memory fresh for years to come parking tickets in one week one doesn t real ize how easy one lives in georgetown says fred chapman in a note to tell us he is settled in peterborough where he is now commerce manager his successor jack hart moved his furniture over from richmond hill last week and is now away on a couple of weeks vacation before taking over his new position mr and mrs george kent who operated fairview inn until selling it to jim print are now operating a restaurant in dundas nice to report that mrs david saxe is home again and making
