cheltenham hoping they might be able toeome but that seems just too much to expect llow ever who knows we listened to an inspiring addess b- brother icnorr of new york and at the close we mingled with the thousands there hoping to cstrb a glimpse of our relatives but it was like looking lot s needle in e hay stack so we bosrtjed a bus iar home and looked at the shope as we passed with regmt knowing that this was our last day ib drar old kngland to morrow we leave for paris tired out we reached our home to be greeted once sgsin by our smiling hostess at the door with these words you hsve visitors who on earth could it be i covered the distance between front door end dining room with sbout x bounds and there aeat rd all around the room was cousin hlancb bert and two others i had not yet met once slain we hugged each other and i told her of the wonderful talk we had heard and presented her with my own booklet on the talk then to my utter surprise and delight she said oh we already have one wr went to the convention and beard it all and got our own booklets i ssked her how on esrth she had found us she said we looked everywhere for you end gsve it up then we saw your information booth so we timidly inquired if they did by sny chsnee know you snd to our surprise they limply pulled out a box of records snd in no lime i tied our sddrrss and here we are she praised the effic l ncy of our organization end the or di r with which everyone conducted themselves illaneh told me she nev er saw so many happy faces 1 thought of thr hsppy faces around thst tabic back at lhrltrnham and rtalurtl thr trui source of hspplness is home which was truly reflected at that ta hit and st the ronrntlun then to m jo they told me that lhi were kmnfc to look lor a nucr to ta all night and would set us off fur iaris in thr morning juki una pne thr had trawllrd ucr too mile to tx at thi contention and to sec us off at victuna station and this they did for all of thrm were at the stst ion ccn before wc arrived they bought platform tickets and carried our bags right onto the train we took pictures of thrm in the queue as wr lined up for our trsin and what a line that was lcr 1300 of thrm ve boardid nur fail express train and in rwry compartment there was a tahli io that you could fill out your passport card 1 was so wea r i fell asleep on that comfortable train at last vc reached nrwhatcn where wc went on board for our trip across the channel we took pictures of the white cliffs of dovcr as we passed the channel crossing was very smooth we hsd a lovely day and arrived at dieppe about 3 hours later i always thought the ferries were very small ana old fashioned but not this one they had a first class dining room like the best hotel snd gsve us s wonderful mesl for only sixpence at dieppe we once again lined up for customs which we psssed through in very short order then on to wait lng traina fait express for psris here we are now in paris we were met at the ststion by witnesses with placards on a long stick which read jehovaha witnesses we followed the placards outside to the concourse where brothers were frantically cop ing with the crowds directing them with maps of the city of parts in which direction they were to go we simply hired a taxi showed him our sssfgnment card and away we went it was still daylight when we got to our hotel and i wished i could have gone out again to see the sights but was too exhausted so crswled into bod supperless we stayed at hotel terminus de lyon right in the busy section next morning we went down to breakfast here was dissappointment non parlet frsncals they brought us coffee like mud only warm with boiled milk in a separate pitcher the milk was thick with scum me no drlnkeo but very thirsty outside the hotel we looked for a restaurant but all were sidewalk cafea so we settled for a beer then on our way by bus and subway to the palais dea sportea where the convention is held we got off our last bus and had to walk the rest of the way we looked into one shop where they sold bread by the yard it looks very funny to tee the people carry 3 or 4 sticks of bread unwrapped we met a brother and slater coming out of a store carrying tholrs so i took their picture with john holding the bread wonder whit toronto health officers would think ofotat we then made our way to trie convention hall whero the breth ren were busy trantfqrmlng it with flowers for our opening day of assem- ly after that wo walked towards the river end theelffol tower it la sit uated close to the river seine sur rounded with a beautiful park there re scats and chairs everywhere to rest we tit right in the- centre of uha huge structure and watched the escalators go tip anil down with the sigfataeert john wanted to go u to top7ttihra ed uvea to get back to our hotel as it was getting late and its one thing to get lost in the daytime and quite ano ther to be lest at night we hid to go all across paris by bus and under ground- it would be fairly easjr u one could converse with parisiennee in their own language that language barried that ill inflicted on the bab ylonians by god when they tried to build the tower of babel wis only one sample of hew thorough ced aeeonv ptlsaes bit purpose no matter how we try to understand each ether we have to give it up in confusion how tver we did have our map of paris and by consulting that together with the help of people and gendarmes we managed very nicely an amusing incident happened to me i wta atoppad by a lady and gentleman who apparently were in a hurry to locate some special place ha was very excited and ell i could do waa raise my hands and aay noa paries prsncaia he threw up his hands and ruahed off to someone else lucky wa brought along our own wash cloths and soap nona hare in paris not even paper in the loll eta steals here and the coat of living is terrific we changed two ten dollar cheques for just bus fsre snd tube tickets for two days a quart can of grapefruit jutcxwas 300 franch or 57 centa so w bought a can in prefer ence to the awful coffee or beer we were warned not to drink the water here as it makes one sick the police men or gendsrmes here direct the traffic with white sticks 1 asked one if i could lake his picture ha eald no so we settled for a street scene with 2 policemen in the distance every other shop here u s sidewalk cafe now on to rome we packed our bags snd shopped around for something to take on the train with us to cat 1 think the people of france must live on those sticks of breed end ham for everyone on the trsin seam rd to hste the ssme thing we hsve twenty four hours on this trsin each compartment holds 8 passengers just like the ones in hnglsnd the sun has gone down and we begin to siltle don for the night we bought small pillows st the sta lion for 10 franca thry helped to stop the vibration of the train now the moon is up and we arc goinj through the alps 1 think it must be liki this in anada while travelling through the hockirs it is as bright a day and those mountains how i wish 1 could gie you a perfect de scription of them tor much of the trip during the night it was mountslns snd more mountsins the prsks of some of them could be seen abow the clouds here snd there were cot tages some of thrra perched on iodic es quite a long ws up snd they hsie worked the ground or gardens in long terraces at the foot of these mountains is clustered the villsgis and towns there are palm trees snd beautiful flowers everywhere t ach person no matter how poor the dwcl ling seems to have his own wnejnrd they have grape vines over arches in the doorways there arc acres and acres of grspe inea sugar canes etc it grows everywhere there is even sugsr csne growing in greet clumps st the ststions at isst we resetted rome snd here wc were met by the brethren who had s wonderful arrsngrment for us to get to our vsrious dcstlnstions they were wsiting with placards on long sticks on which was a corresponding number with that on our assignment card so we all lined up in our various kroups under our own banner then wc marched over to our bus and we were personally conducted to our lod glng a word sbout those bcsullful buses psle blue finish deep soft cushions and even a beautiful fram ed landscape or city view on the rear of each seat the motor was inside the front of the bus on the floor be tween the driver and the coductor it was completely covered with a hood and so clesn you could cat from its surface our home addreaa here wss tenslone torquslti via carducci 2 very comfortable arter dinner we retired for the night to be awak ened at 6 00 am by the ringing of church bells they rsng every half hour for maaa after breakfast we found a bank where we changed our travellers
