marldozos- won the memorial cup last year st catharines won the cup the year be fore the game begins at 2 30 p m and should entertain youngsters and adults alike or if its a fine spring day this sunday how about a leisurely drive around toronto as one of canada s oldest and largest cities toronto presents a wide variety of in teresting sights to the curious onlook er the waterfront for example boasts an imposing harbour and rows of factories west along the water front you 11 come to the lakeshore road a broad tree lined stretch of highway running along the edge of the lake to the city limits still in the west end there is high park a large quiet wooded area containing a zoo pienic grounds and a natural lake rosedale in the centre of town is one of the city s most interesting resi dential areas and was once consider ed toronto s most exclusive district its composed of grand old houses of stone and brick built on winding twisting streets that cross each other and overlap with no apparent plan at all in the queen s park area you will see the buildings of the univer sity of toronto canada s largest uni versity and the ontario parliament buildings and immediately north of queeh s park you 11 find that section of bloor st which is considered the fifth avenue of toronto in the heart of this section is scons restaurant just two doors west of yonge where you may dine in an atmosphere of ease and relaxation on succulent foods pre pared by one of this countrj s most distinguished chefs scott s famous french buffet or steak corral offer you a variety of appetizing foods saturday to play in the finals all report a good time and some ex cellent scores but we still can t figure out why they had to meet at the legion bo early for the 1ong trip to acton ah well boys will very active in inter branch competition just now with competitions in darts bowling and cribbage the committee is also busy at the arena on saturday morn ing looking after the kid hockey this department is one that is getting a little large for comfortable handling and what the answer is we don t know other than the town hav ing a full time recreational director and more ice time for the kids incidentally the boys will be having a real big mght very soon so how ab out all the parents getting out to rtc the lads perform and it wouldn t hurt the odd few fathers to drop down and see the lads play on a saturday morning and the lads would sure get a bang out of it there are a few more down there now on saturday mornings than was the practice years ago but the number is still pitiably small the acton branch of the legion is having their big opening of the legion building on march 23rd 24th and 25th they arc to be congratula ted on the beautiful job they arc do ing and we feel confident it will pay big dividends in members and every other way we have also been asked to tell wnat the schedule at aeton is so we 11 quote max storey past presi dent of acton branch who explained the situationat the last zone meeting on friday night there will be a dance and a limited number would be invit ed from surrounding branches by in vitation saturday afternoon will be open house so anyone may view the building saturday evening will be a stag night and banquet for members only sunday will be a church parade and dedication of the building and it is hoped that all branches will attend naturally the reason for it beine a closed aff r on rnday and saturday nights is obviously that with a mem bership of 250 jour members must be ctered to first and that just uoesn t leave room for an others if jou will recall at branch 120 s anniver sary the same was the case and mjnj wh should have been there were left out merely hecduse there wjs no a uiljble space we would like to add that we heartily eonralulation aeton n their er forward step and wisri them a bright future on this their twent fifth anniversary the branch txicuthc anil members we art sure will echo this thought i ast saturdav afterno m certainly was a bie one ar un i the branch in fact it sftimd quite a job to snare a chair an i we understand that there was one of the hillest crowds ever it the fridiy nifht dance thirc arc some very intcrcstim suggestions outlined in a bulletin fr m ir v nci il c mm ind on the hul 1 tin board we would recommend them to all readers for their earnest ptrusul the points mentione i art jew recently we received a newsy let ter from h r hare who was the 1st agricultural representative or dis trict representative for the county of halton the first office was open all important ones and should be acted on by every one of us wonder when the new washrooms upstairs will be gone ahead with the last general meeting gave the execu live power to get on with the job as soon as they could so it shouldn t he too long until they re underway this will mean quite an improvement to the upstairs this has long been one of the drawbacks to the auditorium the location of the two rooms and this should help immensely so far the membership drive has a good start with a large number of members cooperating by bringing in a member lets hope that the boys continue to do this if you haven t got your new member yet why not get busy right now there is a lot the branch can offer him so you will actually doing him a favour as well as branch 120 by signing him up there have been a number of quos tions asked us lately to explain and some of them took a bit of research in the minutes and from the old tim ers however in the near future we hope to start a corner in this column answering any question if possible about the legion and especially the branch ed on june 1st 1914 over harry gra ham s shoe store in burlington in his reminiscences bunny paid tribute to many leaders for their splendid co operation and assistance numbered among them were elgin harris of burlington the moores former edit ors at acton and georgetown mac smith of burlington the late w p w fisher of burlington to name but a few of those mentioned reference was also made to the first short course held in milton in 1915 to the first school fair held at hornby where a row developed over a tug of war event in which some of the par ents apparently couldn t resist the temptation to help to a drainage demonstration down near hornby and states bunny farmer galbraith sat on the fence smoked his pipe and philosophized this was back in the days of the farmers institute meet ine when the late jim wilson was president and the late archie mc nabb was secretary on one occasion bunny reports those two gentle men drove out to a farmers institute meeting at kilbride it was a dark dirty rainy mght in the fall and while the meet int was in progress some of the village wags perhaps to get back at the late archie who as most peo pic around milton distnet wilt re call was quite a prankster himself slipped the two front wheels of the bully on one side and the two hind wheels on the other apparently ar chie was the driver because bunny reports that they drove all the way baek from fkilbnde to milton with the wheels on the side in the ditch in order to keep some semblance of an even keel and periodically accord ing to bunny good old jim would shout out for g s sake archie get up on the road we re going to tip over all of this was back in the days when the socalled whlte collar farmer wasn t very popular perhaps he isn t yet but in any event bunny and his successors must have laid good foundation because yours tru ly has found halton a mighty fine county to work in incidentally bun ny is now living in whitby retired so if any of his farmer friends are going that way we 11 be glad to provide his address because we know he would welcome a call the mail bag impressfd with guide
