council did ed an addition to the present plant on lower main st would he sensible or a second plant somewhere in the delrex area mr redfern said that he would then recommend no fur ther action until circumstances in dicate that the plant extension will be immediately used while his firm would be willing to do preliminary work at deferred cost he said they would expect the regular engineering scale if detailed plans which take several months to prepare are drawn up engineers are entitled to 60 of their 6 fee at this stage he said questioned by cr harry hale about the present plant which was designed for a population of 8000 but is now running at top capacity according to town engineer douglas wilson mr redfern said it is pos sible that surface water seepage is causing the excess or perhaps per capita water consumption has risen above the figures used when the plant was built ten years ago this would be one thing studied by his firm he said and sewer intake would be metered and compared with the water output if seepage is occurring on a large scale it would be a question of whether it could be economically mopped or whether it would be cheaper to construct a larger tystem and leave sewer lines undisturbed ken nash asked permission for the rotary club to inital benches at certain locations downtown the property committee wu requested to handle this matter in cooperation ned underneath the car and fatally injured mr oswald was taken to hospital in lindsay for observation he was not seriously injured the accident victim was a native of durham and had operated i grocery store in parry sound before moving to beaverton two years ago mr oswald left georgetown when he was triniferred to the orangeville branch and later joined the beaver ton bank itaff a large group of members of the new valley hill ratepayers assou ation most or them residents of the new swanek subdivision besiege d the town council with requests for action on drainage and roads on monday the delegation led hy sam reid president of the organization asked for relief from their plight of mi passible roads and pools of stagnant water which they claim are menac ing childrens safety and making liv ing conditions difficult in the sub division swanek residents have appeared at several council meelingswith similar complaints and last monday the council sent letters to the county health unit and to central mortgage housing which advances loans to the contractors drawing the situation to their attention it was explained again on monday by the mayor that the town can be of little help other than this at the present time the roads in the sub division do not become town pro perty until they arc completed and accepted by the town council must be wary in order to avoid future maintenance costs in so doing he said and the town has no authority to order any work completed similar trouble in a previous sub division he said was overcome by an appeal to the loaning authority which held back funds until roads were put in shape and he hopes this will hold true in this cue too coun cillors have every sympathy of resi dents he reminded the delegation and any action possible will be taken to help them mr reid said he had contacted mr j h hobbs who is in charge of georgetown loans personally this week and had been lold that road conditions are strictly between the town and swanek bros and that the town no doubt has a bond from the construction firm to ensure this mayor armstrong explained that such is not the case councils learn from experience he said and while a new by law requires such a bond at the time this sub division was undertaken it had ot been so several other men spoke including a e taylor ian cass jim mcbnde r c w arren norman carrie and john elliott each pointed out the seriousness of the matter asked questions and urged further council action while saying they had not come in any spirit of animosity but because council is the only legal body to which they can appeal storm sewering was discussed and town engineer douglas wilson said that as far as he can sec these would be necessary for proper drainage mr reid said he would discuss with ratepayers the possibility of putting these in as a local improve ment town clerk john d kelly said that on friday be the town engineer and town solicitor had been asked to meet with a lawyer representing swanek bros the blame seems to lie on the shoulders of fintay munro who sold the property to swanek bros with an understanding that be would put roads in shape mr kelly said and swanek bros are taking steps to force mr munro to live up to his obligation a suggestion that mr swanek and mr munro be invited to a meeting w ith council and ratepayers was dropped in favour of seeing what action would be taken by the swanek lawyer tempers flared briefly on three occasions mayor armstrong objected to a statement that if a child were drown ed in one of the pools town council would be responsible while at an other stage the mayor disputed a remark that georgetown has an ap palling lack of civic pride and streets are in deplorable condition the mayor pointed out that the ratepayer making this statement had earlier said one of his reasons for moving to town was because the same house is more expensive in to ronto one of the reasons for this is because the town has contributed more towards sewers and other ser vices in the past he said and with tightening of controls in future and more requirements demanded from subdividers cost of new homes will be going up cr sykes got in hot water briefly when he opined that council had done all it could last week and mov ed that the subject be closed for the night the mayor said he could not agree and that as long as a ratepayer was in the room and talked sensibly about any problem he would be listened to glenna doherty aypa president members of halton deanery aypa met at st judes anglican church oakville saturday may 12th we serve for christ was the
