police com mittee end police will be on the alert for any further trouble signs georgetown has always been a law abiding town and its citizens young and old have conduc ted themselves as gentlemen should the main st trouble was caused by young residents from other communities we understand and police intend to crack down on any further disturbances whether local or outside youths are involved what georgetown cannot be proud of at present is the number of hotrod enthusiasts who menace traffic and keep people awake with their antics in the early morning hours we watched an exhibition saturday noon from a standing start in front of the old hydro building a young chap squealed around the church street corner we heard the noise as he rounded two more corners then watched him cross the highway at the flasher light and disap pear in a final burst of speed down crowded john street there are better ways to blow off steam than by such thoughtless acts we hope if this young man reads this that he will realize what might have happened if a child had crossed his path he would spend a lifetime- in mental torment for his foolishness norval post offk location after fcntuty nerval marked an historic day on april 16th when the post office which had been lit one location since about 184o moved to new site- the change was necessitated by alterations being made to the for mer barnhill general store by wil fred kfikwood wnp purchased it last fall and is nfoving his entire merchandising operation in the new location the post office is temporarily lo cated in fendleys store members of the barphill family have been postmasters since 1895- the position was first held by wm jt barnhill later by us brother e h barnaul and utterly by hardy barnhill sqifrof e h who wfcs the last proprietor club members and other young people interested in home gar dens ballinafad protests will come later another public meeting to discuss the pro posed zoning bylaw will fall as flat as a similar meeting last fall we predict council could have saved themselves the trouble and gone ahead with whatever action they will take when the matter was discissed on monday the meeting can do no harm however and will at least put council and planning board in the position of answering criticism later on by anyone who objects to a zoning restriction and didnt attend the meeting pot pourri orangeville is having an interesting time with proposed installation of parking meters the move came when council voted 54 for the met ers the mayor being the deciding factor the lo cal chatriber of commerce is against the meters and a statement by a councillor that council shouldnt be dictated to drew editorial response in the orangeville banner pointing out that merchants who are most affected by the meters should be listened to locally the meters are in the offing and council is studying information received from various firms and will probably proceed later this spring here a majority of downtown merchants favour metering and it is at their request that council will be taking action incidentally a few readers may have drawn the conchjsion that after a letter box reply to an editorial against meters sid silver and the editor are feuding while on opposite sides of the fence we can assure you that it is a friendly argu ment that each believes his viewpoint to be in the best interest of the town more letters like mr silvers would be welcomed in the herald where the only personal opinions are those in the editorial columns and in the council reports if you have a strong opinion for or against a topi cal subject why not share your views with other people your letters are most welcome at any public reaction to such important and com plicated measures as zoning tend to come later after the law comes into effect the first time a person wants to build a house in an industrial zone or establish a store in a residential area there will be plenty of public reachon meanwhile if wo are ever to have zoning council must avoid frher procrastination either pass the bylaw or veto it and abandon the lip service to zoning which has been going on now for well over a year time what a
