aaarrrberof the canadian weekly newspaper association i and the ontario division of the cwna population density a question contr6versy oyer erection of large numbers o seriletached houses in the hewer section of georgetown optenfs a large subject for discussion with many pros and cons which could be debat ed the question is closely allied to zoning and is dealt with to some extent in a proposed zon ing bylaw which has been under discussion by council and planning board for well ove a year and has come to resembla a waferfogged piece of driftwood in a lake constantly bobbing to the surface for a second or two then indundated by another wave the fact is thakpopulation density is opt a question which applies only to new construction important as it may seem to regulate the number of families which can occupy a new building it can be equally important to regulate subdivisions of older dwellings and older parts of george town have certainly become heavier populated in the past two decades in one block on our own street to take one example 28 families now live where 18 did originally the situation is a sign of the changing times there was a day when larger houses were v more in style so were larger families however and the increase in number of families living in any given area does not necessarily reflect a sim ilar increase in population number boarding and rooming houses also enter a density argument if the number of families is to be limited in an area the number of boarders becomes of some importance too a chief argument by those who favour single family dwellings is the school cost burden im posed by an influx of children in the case of rooming houses this does not apply but other public services like sewers and water are certain- ly affected on the other hand one couhd become em broiled in statistics which would show that a 2family dwelling where both owners are middle aged without young families is economically more sound than one home which has several schoolage children it is a problem worthy of a solomon and one on which we would publicly venture no definite opinion poll tax could help finances a town council faced with constant up wards pressure on the tax rate might do well to examine a poll tax as an aid to keeping taxes on an even keel in georgetown there is a good percentage of our population in the over21 single bracket young men and women who board with their parents or in private homes these residents contribute nothing directly to the town treasury nor have they a vote and yet they are using public services and in many cases have as come to the fair if the beautiful weather we have been en joying the early part of this week remains for saturday georgetown fair should see the lar gest crowd in history and rain or shine it is georgetowns big day of the year and people flock to the park for the annual gettogether a fair of course is primarily meant for peo ple to show their prize livestock their baking and handicraft skills vegetables flowers and hobbies but while these are the focal points of ahy fair there are equally important elements which go to make up the day the harnessraces are planned to add colour and excitement to those who it in the grandstand the midway attracts the youngsters the hot dogs and candy firenfcn deserve a tribute much interest in georgetowns municipal affairs as others who receive the vote because they are property owners imposition of a poll tax say sio a year could serve to provide perhaps a mill of the lax rate it would be little hardship on the individ ual who in effect would be paying a share of fire and police protection road and sidewalk upkeep sewers and water system in exchange for the privilege of voting for municipal election candidates floss coffee and potato chips are all integral parts of the fair for eating is still one of mans main preoccupations displays by farm imple ment dealers garages and various tradesmen all attract their share of attention and there is the thrill which is part of human nature of just be ing with a crowd saying hello to those we know in town renewing acquaintances with former residents to whom the fair becomes a reunion day saturdays show will provide all these things those who have attended in the past will be back of course newer residents are urged to make it a point to attend and savour the atmosphere of a real country fair fire prevention week always gives us an opportunity to say thanks publicly to those ster ling citizens the members of georgetown fire department one of the most efficient and cer tainly one of the most necessary public groups in town and district their work has been doubly valuable these past few years since a township fire area was formed and these volunteers who serve with out pay now stand ready to protect life and property over a wide area we cannot all be members of a fire depart ment but in our own small way each george- towner can be a fireman by paying attention to sensible fire prevention measures and giving our department less work and believe us the firemen would be just as happy if their only work was to attend the regular practices and never had to appear at an actual fire with fire prevention week to remind us this is a good weekend to fallclean the cellar and attic the back porch and any other place where odds and ends collect merchants might ceptacles where trash gathers a home owner take a look at the depressed cellar window re- might make a point of getting defective wiring fixed mothers a resolution to keep matches well out of way of
