atten tion this bruce county survey covered a twelve month period and was spark plugged by h g bellman agricultural engineering tieldman of the ontario depart ment of agriculture in cooper ation with the bruce county fed cration of agriculture we were amazed to find that the total financial loss resulting from farm accidents in bruce coupty in one year exceeded by approx imately i0 the financial loss caused by the tornado which hit bruce county in julyjof 1956 the tornado was termed a disas ter and great consternation struck the heart of all bruce farmers organized and local pro vincial and federal aid was imme diate sought in this case the to tal damage to buildings was app roximately 102000 in contrast to this farm acci dents in one year resulted in nearly 170 000 financial loss not to mention 230 itrucc lountv farm folk cither killed or injured that is the sort of thing which is going on to a greater or lesser extent in every county in ontario everymember canvass part of anglican stewardship project within the next two weeks ev ery anglican home in georgetown will be visited by a team of men or women as part of a stewardship canvass being undertaken in the parish the canvass ties in with the problems of a church in a grow ing community and is designed for a threefold purpose to increase the spiritual physical and finan cial strength of the parish finan cialty it is hoped to pay off exist ing debt on the rectory which un derwent extensive renovations a few years ago and a new pipe or gan installed last year to streng then the current church budget and provide enough extra to em bark on the building of more adc quale facilities for sunday school and weekda church activities on the spiritual side anglicans will be encouraged to attend church more regularh and to tion the four mqst important loca tions where the accidents occured in the table in which the bruce count committee analyzed the cause of accidents we note 21 or the accidents were as a result of falls 18 from motor accidents and 26 from farm machinery it is only recent h that many of us beijin to realize that farming is a hiehl dangerous or hazardous occupation according to the national safe t council of united states farm ing has a higher accident rate than lumbering coal mining or construction and about four times as hih a rate as all industries combined as one studies the bruce coun iv report and also a pcnnsjlvania studj it would seem that machines can be developed faster than men can learn how to operate them the pennsj ivania study also re veals that girls are much more careful than bos with the high est accident rate in the age group 15 to 19 years of age however in the final analysis the point with which all of us arc concerned is how can farm ac cidents be prevented according to the national safe ly council in the u s the first step must be a sustained effort to collect more reliable information about the causes of farm accidents wc are therefore hopeful that sometime this vear llalton farm folk will cooperate in undertaking a survc of all farm accidents which occur in a twelve month period in the meantime the informa lion secured in the bruce count survey and in the american stu dies all pont to the wisdom of llalton farm operators protecting themselves their famines and em plovccs under some type of in surancc scheme while we do not pose as an authority on the subject if insurance it docs seem to us that every hal ton farm operator should first review his fire insur ance polic the experience of the past jcar would indicate that the average farm operator does not c rr sufficient protection against fires it is ilso our opinion that ever firm operator should investigate vt rkm ns compensation all far n or who employ help on a yeaf ro nd or
