improvements in their prem ises last week saw no less than three grand openings a new shopping centre billed as george town s first selfserve lumbertena made its de but as an adunct to the j b mackenzie son establishment stivers dept store has contin ued a steady program of expansion by adding a sizeable addition at the rear of the building and across the street the wigo television store has been refurbished with new shop window and entrance earlier this season henry s clothing vore had a mor ob of alterations and the former western tire location became a modern larger store when holmes 5 to 1 00 came to town another major change is in process at richard son s hardware which has knocked out a parti tion to make one large store and plans to become a member of the crest hardware group later this spring the dr williams residence is also in process of becoming an office block with the downstairs completed and upstairs in the plan ning stage faith in georgetown s business future is certainly in evidence with these changes and we expect this will not be the end of a continuous policy of improvement noted over the past dec ade in georgetown s business scene mrs a howard in presenting the correspondence included a notice of the teachers summer course a letter from esquering women s institute assuring their support as do scotch block geor getown and bannockburn wo mens institutes local 4j970 united steel workers union in formed of plana- for a benefit dance in jd of the association funds were raised recently by m lucky draw sponsored by the milton loyal order of moose kathy martin milton who sold the lucky ticket receives 1000 a week for a year while the bold er of the ticket burnett dennis of campbellville receives 9000 a week for a year lite report of the regional meet ing held at east haven school for retarded children gave a brief insight on how similar associ ations function these meetings are a great asset to local groups who are beginning and require first people then schools the delrex controversy has brought the question of schools into sharp focus on the local scene these past few weeks some residents have the idea that schools should be under construction before houses are started and while this would certainly be a ben efit provided any given number of houses were built it is not practical from many standpoints the dept of education will not grant assistance to a town for building a school in anticipation of future need and rightly so plans can go awry and announcement of house building in any quantity small or large does not guarantee that houses will be built a school board must be ready to move as fast as possible when a situation crystallizes but it must wait until there is definite proof that a architectural criticism we sometimes wonder if modern architec ture ts not getting out of bounds when it comes to school construction and whether the homes gardens ranch style influence has not over ruled the better judgment of architects who des ign the long onestorey structures which most new schools become of our local three public schools we pre fer the old chapel street style to the factory like glass heavy edifices which give the new look in schools there is something to be said for we miss the roxy the future of theatrical entertainment in georgetown s still in doubt with no decision yet made on whether the roxy will be rebuilt as a theatre or converted to some other use it would be a sad day for the town if it came to the point where there is no theatre and yet it is a definite possibility for the financial success of the roxy has not been too rosy these past few years and without the candy bar and the saturday afternoon matinees the balance sheets would not encourage investment in such a business television is undoubtedly the assassin cred ted with closing dozens of theatres andwe can t believe its effect can be forever crippling with the local roxy paying its way there was always hope that the future would be brighter end that gradually people would come to realize that the successful year reported by milton retarded children school the april meeting of and district association for re tarded children was held at the what council did falltime ensineer suggested for town possibility of georgetown seek ing a fulltime engineer was sug gested by wm ft can- while he waa discussing several of the towns engineering projects with council on monday mr carr who operates bis own surveying business has been ser ving the town in a part time ca pacity since douglas r wilson left to take a new position in montreal a year ago he explain ed that his own work has increas ed and it is becoming increasingly- difficult to produce work for the town when council require it he suggested the town seek young graduate out of school for a year or two who could handle 60 of the work involved there are lots of engineers available at salaries much less than the 10 000 recently suggested in council he assistance from larger and more said in fact statistics show that projected school is sensible to build and that proof is in completed or at least partly comple ted houses it is the only possible way it can operate otherwise canada might have a num ber of schools sitting empty with taxpayers hoi lermg to high heaven about the school boards that wasted public money erecting buildings that weren t needed in the meantime as georgetown grows we will from time to time have staggered classes and overcrowded rooms which are bound to oc cur until school building catches up with school population we must trust our school boards and our councils to do their best to minimize thees troubles by fast action they have doni so up to the present and there is no reason t assume that they will not so conhnueto do in the future wooden floors over the terrazas and tiles which look so pretty but can be so hard on a teachers feet there is more to be said for sensibly sized windows instead of the the expanses of glass which can bring heat in summer and cold in win ter and which too often must have auxiliary drapes to cut sunlight and there is nothing par ticularly beautiful or utilitarian in mile long cor ndors and classrooms scattered over twice the area that needs to be taken up for a school build mg 21 inch screen can t always compete w th cinem ascope and techn color the f re put a new slant on the question however for it s an ex pensive ob to refurbish a movie theatre and desp te insurance there will be a large cost n volved meanwhile for the first time since the old silent movies came to town this weeks herald carries no theatrical advertisement we feel the loss in our pocketbood of course but much more we feel the loss in our heart for we love the movies and miss our trips to the world of fan tasy we can only hope that the theatre owners will feel there are enough people like our selves to once again light up the marquee and announce that the show is on experienced groups one experi enced teacher and mother stated these pupils are not educable but they are trainable the fact that they can be taught to read their own names and trained in the social graces of manners in the home on the street and in their associations with one an other proves very helpful to them in their journey through life mrs jeffares the milton prin cipal attended the teachers meet ing in connection with this re gional meeting and reported they elected the officers and mra jam mon of oall is president thev hope to meet again in the fall when each teacher present will have an opportunity to present any problems mrs thomas howden secretary of the newlj organized mothers group announced the bazaar be ing held may 17 mrs jeffares mrs kingdon nd mrs howden were the ap pointed delegates to the annual ontario association meeting in windsor apr 26 27 in present ing her report mrs howden prov ed to the members the inspiration and information derived by at tending this meeting the church- wood school which was one of many conducted tours proved more like milton than others here they accommodate 49 pupils and 6 adults smith falls school and hospital accommodates 800 patients and a child has to reach the age of three years before be ing admitted the workshops ac commodate pupils from ib to 25 years a resolution was passed to ask the ontario government to increase the grant from 2500 a month per child to 5000 a month transportation costs are a sevese burden on finances mrs jeffares in presenting her report held the attention of ber audience as she revealed what is being accomplished to aid these pupils in finding their place in life despite their handicap the school is more the learner learn ing than the teacher teaching they need to be taught recogni tion of signs and directions the goal is to bring the child to the best function whether it is read ing conservation pictures or books some of these pupils will never read words but if they can be assisted to the measure of their abihtj it is an accomplishment mrs jeffares presented ber monthly report on the progress of the nine pupils and i hi rup fill satisfied the two teachers are giv ing heir best to assist these pu pils mr j sproal in presenting the financial statement for the month said the membership drive bringing results and the interest displayed is appreciated before a penult la granted appearing to explain the work planned by the new reexeatton association john hole an officer of the group received a 9100 grant from the town to assist in expensea involved red cross htelrful rb pouts on relative mrs mary bally of stewarttown who has been the herald s stew arttown correspondent for ma ny years called to tell us what a great help the red cross has been to her and aha felt that perhaps there were oth ers in the same norittonwho could also be helped mrs baoys sis ter is ninetytwo yean old said uvea in dorking surrey england and she had not heard from her for some time and was greatly concerned so she wrote the bed cross in that town and very short ly received a reply from them giv ing her news of her sister and promising additional reports from time to time the herald loses a day nest week with a monday holiday ad vertiser and those submitting news cdpy are requested to be as rly as possible directory men with 9 years experience average salaries of 8000 ques tioned mr carr said that if engineer were hired he would be pleased to serve in an advisory capacity when required an area slightly over six acres has been deeded to the public school board by the town as the site of the new park school suggesting that a laneway be twecn silvers store and simp sonsears would be better paved and restricted to pedestrian traf tic from the parking area behind cr fred harrison said council should investigate whether the lane is public or private property the town solicitor will be asked to ascertain this before the mat ter is discussed further by coun cil an amendment to the zoning by law banning railway marshal ing yards was passed it had been recommended by the planp ing board and last week was de layed pending study while some councillors opined at that time that no amendments should be made until the by law is in effect mayor armstrong said the plann ing board recommends that no changes in zoning be made but that changes in interpretation of wording are in order council also decided to issue a building permit to archie glrard for alterations on his main st n providing there is no reasonable objection from abutt ing property owners in which case the objections would be heard olouut kjeaulu cjlounae harper method is main si north worntown on i tvtv prion fr appointment l trfamtr 7l4l limehouse amateur
