entertained the roup with selections on his accor dion by elmer wright between 1818 and 1830 the credit area experienced much activity bt settlement some well known families moved into the 0a between dundas street audi i the bdee immigrants for the most pert moved into the new survey which commenced at the base line approximately miles north of dundas street the grahams jos eph carter daniel harris and andrew cook took up land in the credit valley andrew bought part of the hold jugs of harris and harrieviue be came cooksvule inns multiplied along dundas street new indus tries grew up stores sawmills tanneries and a distillery in 1820 the mlssissaugas sur rendered all hut about 300 acres of their reserve to be sold by the crown partly to defray the cost of roads so the indians finally even lost this property the white man gaining the land and keeping the money too thomas racey purchased large tracts but times were bad and he was not able to retain his hold ings those tracts are today known as racey tract one newcomer a retired army officer took his reward for service in land grants and on a block of land west of the credit and south of dundas street general adam son also appeared on the scene and was partly instrumental in es tablishing an anglican church st peters church at spring field where mcgrath was appoin ted rector for toronto township about this time peter jones the son of agustus jones and tuhben ahecquay daughter of wahbano- say a chief of the mississauga tribe of the ojibway nation came to the credit to work among the indians there the indians lived in bark wigwams egerton ryerson arrived hi sep tember ja26 ryerson quickly learned the ojibway language to be able to preach to the indians and planned the construction of a chapel the indian village was lo cated on the high ground south of the credit and not on the 200 acre reserve on the flats which was subject to flooding the site was just beyond the point where the mississauga road bends to the south west near the mississauga golf club much of the success of the mission was due to the efforts of peter jones who be came then first indian minister the thirties and forties were fatal years for the mlssissaugas even the mildest contagious dis eases became epidemics and small pox ravaged the settlement they could not adapt themselves to the ways of the white man and the lords of the credit valley were permitted to depart to the grand or the munsey or to other missions today the superior race has suc ceeded m removing the mississau gas from the valley which was their ancestral home just as the passenger pigeon come nqmoxe4 make your own patio reliance flagstone to the credit with the constantly increased pollution future gener ations will be able to add that the salmon
