association and the ontario division of the cw na randofn thoughts on recreation with a group of interested people planning summer recreation for young georgetowners and a community swfmmtng pool in operation there will be no dearth of activity this year people who keep childrens welfare in mind are to be com mended and we hope the young people apprec late this fact and cooperate by behaving them selves and respecting the men and women who are giving their spare time to instruction and or ganizahon at the same time we hope that sports will not become too overorganized into large groups which tend to regimentation and to lack ingenu fty on the part of youngsters when we were a boy and each year seems to relegate us more and more into the doddering stage there was always plenty for a young lad to do perhaps in our home city there was or ganized recreation but for our part we spent a commendable effort students of the harrison pubhc school grade 8 should be highly commended for their outstan ding efforts in preparing the front of the school grounds for tree and shrub planting which took place on a recent saturday under the capable leadership of principal harold henry the initial layout and preparation of the school grounds was completed on time and there was no hitch when planting day came mail bag letters interesting most of the time in our own neighbourhood play ing red light eevy ivyover tag and statue with the district gang we graduated to softball and despite a large schoolyard half a block away and a vacant lot across the road most of the games seemed to be more exciting when played on the side street with anxious mothers chasing us to the playground every now and then youth needs a certain amount of this type of activity which no grownup no matter how zealous can aid we don t mean to say that or ganzied ball soccer or what have you isn t im porta nt but to supplement there should be some neighbourhood activity too which is a long way around of saying that the town coon cil should study with care any thought of doing away with scattered recreation lots which to a child can be as fascinating as a costly develop ment land the grounds have now been converted n beautiful addition to the rexway drive scape we extend congratulations to the school and students and to the georgetown horticultural so ciety who gave a generous financial assist be sides providing adv ce and personnel to assist in the planting sugar and spice my daughter asked me a quest ion that bad me jumped the other renin td just finished telling her bedtime story about alunkle- unkleunky the great- grandfath er of all the monkeys in the jungle and one of her favourite charact ers the old apa had fust put a hard of wild elephants te rout by aph- thta thumbtacks smona them from his parch in tha biggest tree m mm jungle kim thought the story dad to utter a couple of room holding one foot in tha air and howling with pain as i mad wild elephant which had it has been pleasing lately to see an increase in mail bag letters and it is hoped that this trend tfnues the herald is the product of many hands and besides current news which the office staff gathers to me best of its ability there is room for originality on the part of readers who wish to comment on current affairs during the federal election we had a lively dash of viewpoints between two residents rec ently two of our roman catholic readers have commented on the impending separate school while last week one gentleman went to some length in an explanation of how the town could secure a new arena in place of the proposed al terattons to the old one these letters play an important part in the life of a town one does not necessar ly agree with views expressed but when they are welt written and give a sensible comment on some question it starts people talk ng and thinking brings a problem to the fore gives a subject for debate and investigation all of which human be ings need to make use of the bra n power with which they have been endowed in only one point do we differ from the city papers the herald will not print a letter other than under the signature of the writer we be lieve that if someone has something to say they shouldn t be ashamedor afraid to say it personal opinions of the editor appear in this column each week and the editor is the only one who gets the praise or blame the same applies to the mail bag and we expect names with the fetter copy seek blood donors for june 5 clinic the second red cross blood do nor clime will be held in george- town on june 5th at knox church hall and again the local george town and district red cross is ask ing publicminded citizens to help mantain a credit balance in the bhwd bank available to all geor getowncrs m the nearby weeks tour of the continent returning by beat from budand m july then she popped her question which as usuav had no connect ion whatever with anything that was going on i was jnst tucking her in when ahe turned the big orbs on me and asked daddy if theres a mothers day and a fathers day why isnt there a childrens day i triad te laugh it aff and told her ovary day was chudraas day around owr house after wm asleep though whan i waa sit ting dow trying to pick out tha diofca parts in payton place without reading tha whole lousy novel i got thinking about it the more i pondered the more i was convinced there should be a children s day after all child ren arc pretty important if there were no children there wouldn t be any mothers or fathers if there were no mothers and fathers there d be no mother s day and fathers day if those two great annual farces were abolished our retail merchants would be teeter ing on the brink of ruin see where logic can lead you gradually as i considered it the cruelty and thoughtlessness of he whole thing eta into my soul ilka iron tha pore little kids wa give up all our peace on earth for rhem work our heads to tha bono sacrifice and slave for them but we re too selfish to give the most important people in the world our children one single crumby little day of their own by george i said to myself i was getting pretty worked up it s inhuman abominable what kind of callous brutes are we any way7 right there nd then i resolved that i d be the founder of international nondenomination ol childrens day rd be famous like the old skirt who invented mothers day i m not a child but she wasn t a mother and look what a rat race she started since than ive given h a lot of thought and i think i have the derails pretty well ironed out anticipating a little trouble with a few oldfashioned mothers and fathers but i think the vast ma ortty of modern progress uh i mean parents will with me we want to make it a red letter day something the children will look forward to with fiendish dr light and the parents with undii guised fear and trembling first thing to do of course is to get up before them in the morn ing this may require staying up all night but itll be worth it cause you see we ii be giving them breakfast in bed they re to have anything they want for breakfast even if a bag of iellybeans and that sort of wis the pat rn for the day the kids arc to have and do absolute anything thty want they ve lie n saying for weeks that ii far too hot to wear jacket and hat ok let ihem go out in their bare heads and feet even if you have to nurse them for a week afterwards school is oul aa are lessoni and practice of all kinds if they want go picking pussywillows in the swamp let them and if they come home mud to th mi lulls krti l them cheerily answer all their questions im mediately end exhaustively none of this grunting ash your feth r keep thinking up new things for them to do and eat let them watch tv as long as they like nd in the evening send them off to the movies when they get home give thorn a little benzedrine and keep them up ail night reading stories to them the more i think of it lh more wonderful the idea seems it would be sheer hell for the oar ents but i think one treatment would be enough i haven t quite had the nerve to set the date for the first one however i think we cab set it tentatively
