ahryes we had just reached the motel strip at the entrance to jacksonville when we parted compay last week booked in at one and bad dln- w t at this point i must admit to- having a few qualms the desol ate mossfestooned swamps we had driven thru for seventf hours into the misty dareess of the night had given me the creeps after all like most people who take atrip to florida it was the culmination of a dreamwish of many years and before we had started out many and dire were the predictions ab out our possible great disappoint ment because of the damage done by the heavy frosts when awoke and looked around the next morning i fought down a feeling of disappointment although the weather was warm there wasnt much green around no flowers and many of the palm trees had been frostbitten to a withered brown i began to suspect the pro phets of doom at home had been right we should have waited till next year for our trip i hadnt taken into consid eration however that we were in the northernmost part of florida after breakfast we started out for st augustine which was a two hourorsodrive south what a difference those few miles made all feeling of disappointment evaporated in the brilliant sunshine beating down on the lustily tropicallooking city its buildings with their stucco walls pink blue green and yel low made a colourful foil for the stately palms and deep green tropical foliage i could hardly wait to get out of the car to snap some pictures of them st augustine is a completely charm ing old city some day id like to go back and take moretime to ex plore and learn about its richly historical landmarks we had just an hour or so however because we were anxious to reach daytona and find accom modation for our few days there we strolled along the main thor oughfare of st augustine for a while and i took some pictures one place we did explore was just a step off the main business sec tion an ancient episcopalian church built of stone which the centuries have turned black we stepped inside as all interested passersby are invited to do the interior had a quaint reverent charm and as we retraced our steps to the vestibule i noticed there an orderofservice and acti vities for the coming week the minister the next sunday hailed from canada and was a graduate of western ontario in london the graduation year caught my eye it was the year my husband had graduated too i drew his atten tion to it and sure enough st augustines visiting minister and he had been classmates coincid ence has a long arm eh we took the shore road to daytona a go or 70 mile drive with the sea breaking on the beach quite close by all the way the white sandy beach seemed endless it was our first glimpse of the open ocean and needless to say that was a thrill in itself in our travels yes terday florida had seemed a de pressing land of cypress swamp and hanging moss now it had changed completely on this road nothing was visible but sand on the one side of the road it was terminated by the sparkling blue sea and on the other miles of stuntedlooking cacti plants spiky and foreignlooking formed a pre lude to dense tropical forests ex cept for little sandy hummocks the land is completely flat at present a gigantic effort is underway to reclaim these waste lands and turn them into resort areas signs advertising lots for sale appear frequently im quite sure it will be just a very few years before that 60mile strip with its beautiful beach frontage will be completely built up with mot els and cottages we met that auinafad mothers guests for closing cgit meeting rrhe closing meeting of the cgft group and perhaps the highlight of the years activities was their mo ther and daughter banquet held in the church basement on monday night fiftyone sat down tq din ner which was provided for the girls and their guests by the mem bers of the womens association itie occasion was very impressive in the fact that all the girls bad their mothers as their guests be side them and also included among the special guests was the groups honorary president ikrs f j shor till the sunday school superin tendents messrs duncan gibson and boss shortill the minister mr a neelon the president of the wtms miss beatrice hilts the president of the evening auxil iary mrs e mcenery and the president of the wa mrs geo jtmunds the toagtmlstress was the git president miss donna smith and toasts were proposed to the queen by mary baker to our mothers by jean liawr piled to by mrs c snow tq the church by june given replied to by mrs neelon doreen smith read a report of the years work and mrs black presented the girls with their awardsjaiest wen to- jean feafrtmaria breescbooten and louise snow mr neelon led in real rousing singsong mrs shortill sang a very beautiful solo and beth mcenery gave humorous readings the guest speaker for the evening was mrs bruce rolling from mount albert who has been in cgit work for some time and she gave the girts a real challenging mes sage on gods hope chest she with her humorous illustrations delighted the entire audience and everyone was encouraged by her message a special filmstrip on japan was presented and after the courtesies given by marie mit chell the evening closed with the singing of taps mrs neelon was presented with a bible by the girls as she will be leaving us soon and mrs black was also given a gift from the girls mrs plowman from calgary is visiting with mrs frank morrison sunday service at balllnafad church was conducted by two rep resentatives from the gideon or ganization in the absence of mr neelon who was attending confer ence at hamilton vr murray co les led in the worship and mr ja- nies penfow from guelph gave the mesage each time the work of he gideons is presented we- learn mote of their program and it is remarkable to know that the or ganization has been in existence for 60 years and at the present tune there- are 1700 members it cost 20000000 a year to meet the requests that come to them and one third of tlris amount is given by the members- personally and the rest is received through offer ings at church services where they are invited to attend and from special memorial fund they are to be commended sfor their fine chrtiuan ministry as many people are encouraged by theh efforts driving atong very little traffic when you smite another smiles and soon there are miles and miles of smiles a smile relax a while with 3fe- oramge 36qmcwtth ownggc the numerous trucks carry ing loads of palm trees were all the more noticeable looking at them i realized with surprise that palm trees dont have roots like ordinary trees they just have what resembles a bulbous enlarge ment at the base of the trunk thus they are easily transplanted evid ently these trucks were hauling thorn by the hundreds from the forests to replace the palms that have been blighted by the frost in the resort areas there was plenty to see if you had the time and money to spend along this road all the attractions were wellheralded with bright signs proclaiming the wonders to be seen in the rep tile jungle not for me thanks parrot jungle crocodile farm etc we passed them all by until we came to marineland here we spent a couple of highly inter esting hours the building itself was quite a showplace in architec ture and landscaped gardens we arrived just in time to see the trai ned porpoises perform in a large dutdoor tank the tiered seats were filled with spectators and i con sider we got more than our mon eys worth the stands they per formed wer incredible i woudnt nave believed you could train fish like that if i hadnt seen it for my self one of the attendants told us that porpoises have been found to possess a large brain with excep tionally intelligent qualities every year brain specialists come down the aquarium to study them for several weeks the porpoises were only part of the show however after it was over we entered the building which enclosed a fab ulously large tank filled with salt water and just about every kind of sea fish known including deadly sharks and barracudas there were windows around the sides en three separate levels so you could ijet a real closeup and a vicarious thrill to have the monsters so near you and yet so far they have to be kept wellfed for reasons you can imagine and we saw a man in a very well padded diving suit boots and gloves go down into the tank to feed them believe me that was a job marineland also includes a de partment for the smaller tropical fish these were in individual little tanks which enabled you to get a good view of them too had my first glimpse of an octopus a baby one and it was without a doubt the strangest evillest-look- irig creature i have ever laid eyes on in addition to tbe weird ones were the tiny vividly beautiful tropical fish i remember partic ularly the phosphorescent glow of the little peacock blue ones by this time the excite ment of the day was almost too much for me between tbe tropical landscape and weather the sea st augustine and ineland by the time we emerged from tbe aquarium i was practi cahy ill as we set off for the last lap of our jouney to daytona re marked that i was glad i hadnt waited till i was older to take the trip tm sure all the excitement would juve given me a heart at tack mrs jones gives topic at afternoon auxiliary me churchs high hour was the subject of the topic given y mrs r h jones at a meeting of the afternoon auxiliary of st johns united wms last tuesday mrs jones stated that less than half of one percent ot the so mik hon people of japan have accepted christianity and today there is a grave crisis in the life of the church let us pray she said that the door will remain open and more missionaries will be sent locally there were twelve hdme visits and one hospital visit made during the past month after a few words of grateful remembrance by the president mrs walter brown- ridge a moment of silent prayer was held for mrs charles junkin whose death occurred recently miss mabel forgrave had charge of the devotional and read from phil 4 19 in prayer we can lose our burdens of anxiety and learn to rejoice in the lord as we give him thanks for all the good things we enjoy tt us never hesitate to bring our worries to him she said and be thankfut when he gives us the strength to bear not only our own burdens but part of our brothers also she closed with prayer money donations were received from the cgit and explorer groups of the church the june picnic meeting is planned at cod- arvate school
