the high school demolitionand building pro ject council has asked the school board to re consider their decision two weeks ago a ten der bid of 430 710 was accepted for the job it was the lowest of six tenders received sec ond low tender was by a georgetown contrac tor who had in fact built the last addition to the school the matter would have ended there except for the fact that there was a difference of only 340jn the two bids a small fraction of variance when one is talking of almost half a million dollars when two school board members visited council a week ago monday to ask endorsement for an extra 100 000 in debentures for school additions at acton milton and georgetown this matter was discussed to some extend although kept to generalities this monday councillor hyde absent from the previous meeting spoke at some length prior to presenting a motion ask ing the school board to reexamine its decision he pointed out the economic advantages of keep ing a large share of the money circulating in town through wages paid and material purch rakes danger comes closer ases his strong plea met with unanimous en dorsement by council in asking reconsideration by the school board the s luation is certainly involved unt i the dept of education sanctions sign ing of a contract the school board cannot com plete a deal with a contractor should the de partment decline to approve the board cojld award another tender or call for new tenders should approval be given by the department it would be a matter of legal opinion if the board could break its implied contract a large number of local residents are justi ftably concerned that a local firm has been by passed in the award of such a large contract according to a school board spokesman local board members had favoured the local contrac tor but a vole showed board majority in fav our of the low tender perhaps board members from other municipalities overlooked the impor tance of keeping business in town it is to be hoped that the school board will pay some heed to councils suggestion and give further consideraf on half a million dollars of local business s someth ng one cannot lightly throw aside confirmat on that a fox destroyed in the vicinity of the sykes tool plant was rabid and reports of unusual appearances of foxes in town ond district should warn residents to use caution in approaching wild animals which are acting in strange fashion foxes particularly are not accustomed to appearing so boldly in populated centres and if they do there s a good chance that they are suf fenng from this dread disease should a resi dent notice anything peculiar in the actions of wild animal i fe it should be immed ately repor ted to the pol ce destruct on of a fox a rabb t or skunk is much more preferable than to have human attacked for rabies s a most unpleas ant form of llness painful and sometimes fatal we are somewhat myst fied that govern ment authont es have not set up innoculalion clinics as they did a few years ago when there was a smlar scare wh ch m this part of onta ro had little confirmat on in reports of animals seen or k lied a rabies epidem c would seerr to be much more close this time than it 3id then however we must assume that the proper auth orities are aware of this and will move f and when they deem it necessary mean wh le peo pie should use more than orj ary
