association and the ontario division of the cwna editorial comment i public life ups and downs when one enters public life he must be prepared for its ups and downs mondays elec tion resulted in a down for one councillor who had served several terms and arjlup tor an aspirant making a second try for office we con gratulate the successful candidates and extend condolences to those who didnt make the grade we were particularly impressed this year with the number of men and women offer ing to serve as council members the job is not an easy one public service has its rewards and its discouragements and it is not a job for which many people have both the time and ability to fulfil from what we know of the thirteen can didates this year we feel safe in saying that any group of six would have done a good job for georgetown perhaps another year some will be back for another try as council tor alfred sykes bids his adieu from the council table we can say that he will be missed next year he is a man who speaks his mind because of this we were sometimes bigger better than ever sponsored by the lions club with generous assists from the firemen and other public service organizations this is always one of georgetowns biggest days the parade will follow the same pattern as last year starting at windsor road and the highway at 130 pjn and wending its way downtown via the cenotaph corner to mill st where santa will take up his position as usual between the two banks the lions have prepared for 2000 children this year far the largest crowd ever each will have a chance to see santa in person and receive an orange and a bag of candy frem the jolly old gent in disagreement with him sometimes in harm ony which is the proper way for only a man who speaks for public popularity or does not speak at all is the one who cant be criticized new councillor mrs currie will establish a first for me town when she takes her seat in january she is the first woman to ever be elected to public office in this towns century of history her background of observation as a newspaper reporter should give her a good start as a councillor we shall be careful to quote her correctly in future for we hashed up her nomination speech when we reported her as saying my only promise is a negative one not to make mistakes for not to open your mouth is the way to avoid making mistakes that first not shouldnt have appeared the phrase may be timeworn but the only thing which can describe this saturdays santa claus parade in townjs bigger and better than ever at least 25 floats are promised for the par ade this year and if they live up to the standard set the past few years they will be well worth seeing in its own way the local parade is on a par with thosein larger centres and those who have moved ter town during the past year are advised not to miss it the santa parade is a selfsustaining effort of the lions and to meet its cost lucky draw tickets are sold each year with dolls dressed in dollar bills and a number of poultry as prizes if you havent already purchased a ticket you can help the club by doing so when you turn out to see the parade on saturday
