autboriied as aeeond class null post office dent ottawa editorial comment ready for traffic light some time ago when the town council con sidered a traffic light at the water street high way intersection the dept of highways which is ttie governing body on highway installations ruled that the accident ratio at the corner did not justify tights with at least three accidents at the corner in recent weeks and others occurring in the in terval perhaps it is time the situation was re viewed to our mind georg separated by the highway into two sections with john and water streets connecting the two has definite need of adequate traffic control at this main corner which work for a safety oouneik funnels traffic from the industrial and downtown districts into a bottleneck it is particularly bad at rush hours and on many occasions cars are backed up to the post office on one side and to the arena on the other waiting to make a dash across the highway add to this extensive left turns from highway traffic onto water st and you have a situation which needs correcting while property damage has been consider able in accidents at the corner luckily no ser ious injuries have occurred someday there will be a fatality and before this occurs it would be wise to take action safety is becoming an increasingly common word in town with pokce school and industrial officials stressing this it is so d to deal with a topic in the abstract and we wonder if a safety coun cil could be of public assistance by forming a branch to suggesfconcrete improvements in town and district there are many places where a small ex penditure could save an accident the town roads department and the police keep a good eye out for such things but sometimes the obvious is missed a guard rail might be down or a stop sign missing and not be noticed for a few days some brush might hide an intersection a pothole merchants must pay if modern parking facilities are to be provi ded for downtown shoppers merchants and own ers of business blocks must be prepared to pay for this and if they dont pay they cannot ex pect to compete with other local shopping areas where such parking is available gratis the parking problem was discussed at a meeting of merchants last week ceiled by the chamber of cornrnerce a committee was cho sen art the meeting to investigate all aspects of the question ascertain land prices and recom mend a fair way of assessing costs among mer chants acquisition of the present parking area be hind one section of main street which is a rriix- ittbe i what council did caution on spending is urged by finance minister n the road rr there for a few days before it comes to the attention of the proper authorities other traffic impediments may be on private property one that comes to mind is the eastern approach to the cnr tracks on john st where a large bank obscures the view of northbound trains a safety council could have a spotting committee which would note plaowwhere safe ty could be approved and bring it to the atten tion of the proper authorities a highway traffic light as mentioned above could well be within its scope as could amber rights to mark irr sections as suggested by a town councillor at a meeting last week ture of private and publicly owned lend on which some conservative public expenditures have been made will cost an estimated 50000 by the time it is put in al shape shared by sothe fifty down town businessmen the cost would average 1000 per business if merchanrts are prepared to pay their fair share and there would 1favgtobe so a i lo ances of course to compensate a business whose clientele is limited compared with say a drug or doming store then the sooner the plan is final ized the better if the majority of merchants cannot agree on cost sharing then we can see a dim future for downtown georgetown we most be cautious on spend ing this year wu niianw mini ster garfield mcqllvrmyi warning to council at thursday ma lkbaitnaliilljyttn i960 deficit might be even higher than wu estimated in the interim statement and that he wu going to be cautious about expenditures until he sees the auditor report i dont like having spent 8000 on dust laying last year said deputy reeve gray who is mad chalrmap for i figure it is money wasted mr gray said bis department has exceeded its budget the put two years in striving to elimin ate a lot of nialnienance by a hart surfacing program he wants to continue the program this year so georgetown will be known u a tbwn of good roads questioned by cr hyde about plans to eliminate s dangerous condition at the mountainviev- river dr intersection mr gray said it would involve a tremen dous amount of moneyif the county engineers suggestion to widen river dr were carried out the county is only prepared to grant fsotp jor the improve ments and he thinks a cheaper way can be found mayor armstrong suggested that town engineer win h carr be asked to report on what he considers to be the most econo mical yet efficient way to solve the problem terming the highway george towns show window mayor arm strong asked the light committee to see if anjr further improve ments canbe made by changing- existing light locations or adding new ones to make it more v tractive cr fred harrison suggested that amber lights at all intersec tions would be a good addition otherwise the new style lighting is on almost the whole highway stretch through town referring back to a question posed th december about eligibi lity for eelcted office a letter bringing up children is subject for
