street ome and school had as uheir guests three people from the milton district association for retarded children mrs ernestball a director of the association introduced mrs o jeffares the principal of the sun shine school in millon she spoke about the school in milton and the benefits children get from it mrs jeffares explained that she had nine pupils from the acton and mitton area all of these chil dren had made wonderful prog rcss both socially and academical iy she told the parents what a sad and frustrating thing it is for a child who is- retarded to be in nor mal school competing with other children how it effects not only the child but the whole family mrs jeffares said her experiences with these children and their faro ihes had proved suoh a child is happier to be with children of his or her own mental age a story was told of a retarded child who had been in public school and had been most unhappy this had affected the whole family and eventually the child s teacher had explained to the mother that she could do no more for the child and suggested a visit to the family doctor after this visit to her doc tor having had her fears confir med the mother enrolled her child at school since then the family has settled down the child is attending school daily and is raak ing wonderful progress mrs jeffares then introduced mr addison of milton who show ed a film called tuesday s child this film showed the problems of a retarded child the heartache of the family and how by the right kind of teaching these problems can be facd and overcome to the benefit of the family and most important to the child after the film mr addison spoke of finances he explained the dept of education gives a grant monthly for each child this grant just about covers both teachers salaries in milton the balance has to come from the public the association has wonderful support from municipal grants institutes lodges and clubs it was explained that in the av erage community 30 out of 1000 children are estimated to be retar ded in some degrees about one third of these children cannot pro fit from ordinary schooling but require special assistance each child has his or her own capabih ties and must be taught and coach ed singly the ont association for retar ded children oarc now has sev erryschools until five years ago there were no educational facili ties for the retarded children the oarc estimates that there are ab out 8500 mentally retarded children of school age in ontario far the schools are able to care for only 1460 but they are growing fast mr addison told the parents that he felt the time would soon be here for the association to con sider building a new school with perhaps a sheltered workshop where the older child could be helped to develop skills to help him in later life it was sugges ted that perhaps a local pilot com mittee be set up in georgetown to study where the best location would be in north halton for such a school he ended by saying the oarc has shown that mentally retarded children m their schools are in deed most happy children child ren who can be loved and who can love in return they have shovn that these children can learn up to a point and can live happy and useful lives limehouse grade a preorcsseo regular or oven ready roasting and frying fta chickens 70 food prices effective april 16th 17th 18th extra lean maple leaf peameal
