by tha editor the other day i had an interest ing chat with another new member of our teaching staff mrs qlynn mrs glynn attended weston high school after which she entered the univenit of toronto and gradua ted in classics after attending the ontario college of education she began teaching at ghs mrs glynn teaches grade 9 geography and latin to many other grades latin is indeed a favourite of hers she loves noth ing better than finding and study ing connections between latin and english this latin enthusiast has ma ny interests outside school activi ties mrs glynn is very fond of animals she has been chairman of the nightschool classes for the last two j cars and has been con nectcd with them for four years she is also on the executive of the arts crafts and a favour ite pastime is spinning mrs glynn has travelled cxten lively taking in england scot land where she visited relatives ltal and most of europe she told me of her nlercsting tour of rome and 1 only wish i could tell you more about tt she took many pic lures throughout her european tour she is very happy to be teach ing and with such an interest in her subject and her pupils her latin clasii must be very inter estin must our marks be published june lyon it is nearly may and the final ex ams are marching stcadil closer yesterda a thought concerning these inevitable horrors struck me as most of you know every final mark of every student in the school including grade 13 department als is published in the georgetown herald those subjects which are failed arc shown with a capital f is this necessary to those students who make sin cere attempts at the subject or subjects in which they arc low the capital f or a showing of 50 per cent can seem terribly hugt and noticeable in my opinion the two tup pup lis in each clas who receive the awards at commencimint and the scholarship winners of grade 13 diou d be the individuals to have their marks published after all those who donate the scholarships so kindl hav e a right to know where their money is going so how about it kids if we make enough noise mabe the pub- hine of our final marks can be done awav w th are you with me high tales published by the first birthdaj number nine of a series ot fiction why is school spirit nil virginia walkar this problem has confronted ma ny schools and was one of the basic prorjlcjns this past year at ghs what can 1m done to pre vent this next year many studepts have been asked to give you their ideas and suggestions to overcome this situation that is a good question we of the student council wish that we knew we would certainly like to find out last year there were numerous complaints that we did not have enough dances but when wc did have only a few people came out this year we have had a few more dances changed the night to fnd ay night and have supplied good prizes for the various novelty dan ces the crowds have increoed but so has the size of our school there should be far more people coining out to the dances why we are like this is beyond me we have done every hun that we could think of to promote the events this vear interest has in creased but it could still increase a treat deal before it could be cal led any thing more than passing now that we are getting a gymna torium and will have practically a new school by next september perhaps things will improve i cer tainly hopi that they do tom porgravc it is obvious that ghs hasn t got much school spirit for stance half of the kids haven t bothered to bring the money for the year book and if thev were really interested they would have brought it long ago i think the way to increase their interest would be to allow students to attend out of town games when the don t sec the game thev don t care su much who wins maine green wood 9d there are no two ways about it this vear there was definitely no school spirit it rhaps this i due to the fact that there are so very few stuck nl activities outside of a few elubs this vear due to the construction wc have had no pt s usual there have bein ew school dame- a result of no support it semis this ar there have been so manv exams that upper school has been too busv to organize these activities and then whin thev do there is little or no support given b lower school since three fiflhs of the studmt bod j is lowir school thev will have to show m ire enthusiasm perhaps if thev approached student coun cil with the gym we can hold these activities next vear and if we show more enthusiastic support hi ad quarters may let us have more activities how would vou define school spirit lo altv indulge nee in activil is or staving with the school more than five viars it is not indicated c rrectlv bv the per on who comes to a dance pis and leaves five minutes later with the ihe champ itus would days too 2 an athletic society should be aned this is similar to the student counul having its own ex ecutives the kids pay a certain fee at the beginning of the year to belong they have dances also to make money and sell hot dogs and pop at games with the money the society makes they buy bars cups and gym equipment in a luh like this the kius would work lo receive bars and it would be more fun 3 students should be able to bring outsiders to school dances and there should be more dances many people struti school activi lies because thye dislike the nee esary work if you are going to be in an activity ou have to do some work its the least you could do i think the main reasn is bee ause the school is not equipped to have activities to please every one the only activities at pres cnt arc the science club 1scf choir student council high tales and the 1 ibrarv club only a few people are interested in one of these and 70 per eent are left with no activity to participate in there fore with club midtown skating and hockey the students natural jv go lo these instead of the few school activities the organizers of our numerous school aetivilies work hard as do the pupils who paiucipate in them lo create interest for oth en- however much of their work seems to be in vain the advertising idea has been worn threadbare but some stud ents remain deaf to all appeals and won t respond perhaps a revival of school spirit could be conducted on a class ba sis by having classes compete ag ainst each other in such things as basketball hockey or football find the best players and hence ihe best team lo be bent against other schools our newly devel opine em should skyrocket inter est in sports such as vollejball and basketball next vear as jou can see there are number of ideas about how overcome this problem iai us not overlook the fact lliat there reasons for no sch ol spirit 1 inv students work after school and therefore don t to to school fcames held after sehool or prj licus for tournaments manv stud ents live out of town and cannot sia after school for fear of m uif the bus not enough advertising has been done to sell our activities to thi students pep rallies used t br ng the students to the game but new students frequently don t know the school cheers as there were not enough of these rallies a few vears ago it was com pulsory to wear school colours on vour blazer but that too has gone b the boards announcements made about the school events over the pa are usually made before lhe first period there is a lot of scuffling around then after a football game for the players or a victory dance both of these would bring the kids out 1 at the beginning of the year the pt class should be divi ded into squads each squad has a squad leader who sees to it that every person in her squad has a clean uniform etc shekeeps a record and if a girl gets three black marks against her she may not receive a uniform bar all girls participating tn gym crass with the uniform should receive a uniform bar if every girl pays 5c at lhe beginning of the term these bars can be purchased and paying for them would encourage girls to work for them if tbe lunch periods were it the same ume and an hour long a schedule could be made for tournaments what is my job job for you and m ever asked cod what he wants you to do some of you will say don t talk to me about religion besides that s for the hirels and sissies is u7 some of our famous and well known athletes are followers of jesus christ two boxers lew is and jersey joe walcott both declared publicly their faith god rayford johnson quoted as the worlds best athlete and 01 ympie champion in 1955 said ever since 1 became a christian in my junior year at high school i have loved jesus hrist with all my heart he is the leader of my life without his help i could not hitve participated ui athletics these men and others before each fight race baceball game hockey game prayed to god for strength and guidance during the game and if they lost they felt justified are these men sissies no matter how hard you try to get out of it our whole life is centred around christianity and god don t our brave history teacher ir walker the class of 11a and kueats from 11b c and d boar ded a bus bound for toronto our destination was the royal ontario museum and a side trip planned to the parliament buil dinl after about an hour s peaceful bus i jde we arrived in f rsnt of he museum everyone piled out was counted and assembled in groups tljen wc marched up he fteps into the huge building once inside groups were forgotten as ach person spied the comfdrtable lounge chairs and made a dash for ihem these couches were boul the only common modern articles in the whole building as f und out almost immediately lunlc appeared oui of no where and suggested we begin aftermarchingdownsiairs and re noving our coats we were given lurdy utile stools to carry then on we went stopping every cond step to stare at something along the way soon we came to display which was supposed to look familiar ancient egypt we arranged our stools which proved well used around a display case to our utter dismay large white sheets of paper and a box of pencils were passed around it proved harmless however the questions were easy and the pa p weren t to be handed back our guide explained everything in detail and it was very interest ing indeed we saw ancient wea pons of stone bronze and copper pottery of all shapes and sizes equipment used b ancient work men and last of all the mummies since it was just before lunch this display was admired from a dis- tanie by some after a rather hectic lunch we returned to the museum and tour id the gallery where a display of masks were shown of course i cm mblances were soon noted and just about evervone has a poiliait in that section we then had a hour lo view the museum on oui own and everyone went off in a different irection we didn t do too badly because we only lost tw i piopu i soon evervone was becounted for and we rolled on to our nexf stop the parliament buildings this proved very educational espcciallv a certain room where it someone touched vou it felt a though you had received a thousand volts finally we were on our way home worn but but chuck full of knowledge after our educational trip to the city ghs grad describes teachers college betty avry enthusiastic about teaching to be sure one young future teacher is she is judy mccumber and is now attending toronto teachers college here judy has been taking a one year course which consists of two weeks of lectures at the col lege on the methods of teaching elementary subjects followed by one week of actual teaching in an ontario school throughout the en tire year each week of teaching begins with observation of a cass and its teacher 1pr the first day the rest of the week the student teachers do the work while the real teacher marks them part of the course is composed of teaching th a rural school judy chose a school in nassagawcya she found the one room school confusing at first but things soon fell into pat tern lessons are ten minutes longer in rural schools instead of the forty minute lesson periods in urban schools judy found teach ing in last york and teaching the new canadians especially reward ing after this experience with tea ching judy would like lo teach grade 3 because she finds the grade 3 course interesting and finds its pupils broken in to school life bul not yet as the smart aleck age teaching teaching was such lovely sport in
