jacks bargain centre we need a new approach to education recent information from the united states has revealed o horrifying development in the current trend towards education in rochester boys were given a course in homemaking in cah fornta students were given school credits for working in a super market in maryland a course in drycleaning may be taken at one of the schools another new york school is proud of the fact that t has five gymnasiums a retail store and a classroom devoted to living whatever that may be in canada we cannot avoid the influence of progress or degeneration which takes plaec sbuth of the border how far off the rails have we gone in the same direc tion we are unfortunately living in a time and place where many peo ple agree with the philosopiy of svhere ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise this is an age in which the intellectual is called an egghead a thinking man is a tv gimmick and a brilliant student s a misfit in this country wc- have not vet surrendered comple tely to the misguided dogooders who would have us believe that the essential function of education is to keep the clu dren happj and healthy and jet many people are already addicted to this eas futile approach now is the time for the more tolerant thoughtful and less vociferous members of society to make their voices beard now is the time for them lo state i mpbatically that their children are being sent to school to learn how to read write speak and to think if some extracurricular activities are required there v ample scope in such things a manners deportment personal h gicne and cleanliness many young people do not sec too much attraction in obtaining a good education their ideals arc sports celebrities moues stars and tv personalities one cannot blame them for this here lies the lamour the romance and the n ches there appears little rfcd for a high scholastic level tn order to draw a fast gun or sing a pop ular song this point of view from a twelve year old is understand able but let us hope that our edu cators and school boards will main tarn a higher approach than ttm and insist that schooling is provi ded to give the child learning not a good time it is a wonderful thing that so many of our schools arc equipped lh gymnasiums sports fields rkshops and auditoriums these great assets which provide nealthy exercise and a break in the monotony of a strictly acai ic program let us not go over board on this so that we lose sight af the essential purpose of school ing alread there is too much emphasis on such things as baton twirling motor car driving using the telephone and so on if this trend continues our schools will finally be turning out happy illit erate morons well versed in a mul titudc of non essentials alrcad in the united states manj students select thur high schools and colleges on the ba ir of athletic standing without an consideration of the academic as pects the faeulij or teachers ma j be a bunch of half wits but so long as the coaching staff is und this doesn t ma ter this ma explain wh 20 per cent of the d raj tees to the u s armj an found to be illiterate and un train able and suitable only for men lal labour there will be consid erablc pressure on our education al svtem to go the same wa to provide our children with a coun try club atmo phcre a minimum af learning and a good time for all one of the biggest obstacles to the establishment of a more sound approach to education is the atli tudc of man parents this atti tude maj varv from ovir indulg ence to complete indifference re gardless of the protestations of man superficially informed hea 1 tn thecloud observers we do have a social problem with vast num txrs of our voung people the root of this problem in most cases be traced direct l back to par ental indifference irrcsponsibilit and ignorance it is putting the h fpr i hi h tn t who is stationed at port albcrni on vancouver island with the rcmi there was no church on sun luj in shelltv st godparents mr and mrs ii smith toronto and mrs v cloke jr legislation requiring purtihts to hiring up their chudren in a dec ent manner we have made some attempt to protect children from neglect of the body but how are we to protect them from neglect of the mind as a societj we are far loo soft lind tolerant with parents who neglect the most infportant job in their lives the care and training of then own children the results of this un happy situation can be seen in our juvenile court where attempts ae made to dial with the problem when it is often too late finallj we need to question the wisdom of providing the same ed urational package to each child particularly during the years at hith school there can be no doubt regarding the wisdom of wishing to educate all children up to a particular standard say grade 12 unfortunately this is impossible it is putting an un necessary load on our teachers to expect them to get a child through grade 12 when he has reached his montal limit in grade 10 our high school classes arc liberally sprinkled with children who are being subjected to a level of edu cation which is beyond their abili ty to absorb these children would be far bettor off at a trade school earning a useful occupation s that when school days were over they would be equipped to do something better than digging dit ches or stacking shelves in a supermarket under the present system they are likely to stay at high school perhaps under pros sure from parents who are unable to face the fact that their child ren have reached the4wjjit of their academic abihu under these con ditions the child becomes fxustra ted by his ffe shortcomings he ets bored he becomes aggressive to cover up h feelings- otwinfer be xejecls ihe sseiprinc of idem4the teahetwtw is we
