record good results announced last week for upper school students at georgetown high school re flect credit on tioth staff and students achieving success in 78 of papers written the schools average is considerably above the provincial average the school will send at least fivte young men and two girls to university for courses in engineering medicine and teaching another boy will study at ryerson two are tak ing nursing courses and two plan to become pub- kc school teachers three students who are qual ified to continue have not yet made their decis ion about what this fall will bring analyzing the results one fjnds that stud ents wrote a total of 190 papers fortytwo of the papers were below the necessary 50 and 148 above bylaw revision sensible revision of the subdivision bylaw to include en optional cash payment of 400 per building lot in lieu of maintaining the 40 industrial commercial ratio in building would seem like a sensible move on the part of the town council regardless of the fact that the ratio is at pres ent so far out of line that it is doubful if it could balance for some time to come adherence to the rule might stall house building operations com pletely other than on scattered individual lots in town and a virtual ban on buildingbperations would not be a good thing for georgetowns ec onomy the 400 figure was arrived at after a study of cost factors present in housing expansion and a tjewsy district frequent articles in magazines and the daily press about people from georgetown district makes one realize the diversityof talents which abound in a small part of the province for example in recent weeks a toronto daily featured a story about rebecca sisler a sculptor who is now living at the forge in terra cotta the same village gained added fame a few years ago when mr and mrs harry farrar established their nowfamous terra cotta inn famous for its englishstyle roast beef and duckling dinners spot on 7 another gathering place for gour mets received added publicity when the week end magazine which circulates through a large nufrfoer of canadian dailies printed a number of recipes of its proprietor gladys fraser and told of her attractive dining place on george- h towns eastern outskirts of 37 students writing one or more upper school exams there were eleven who wrote a full complement of 8 to 10 papers several 4th formers wrote a few upper school subjects oth ers were completing their 5th form in two years and some for one reason or another did not write enough subjects to complete their full high school education these eleven scored animpressive total of 88 papers passed and 9 failures to make the av erage in this department slightly over 90 in these days when criticism of schools and teachers is all too common it is comforting to know that georgetown has an excellent high school where students receive the best possible in education amply proven by statistics according to council is the equivalent of the cap ital cost for education assessed against an aver age building tot councils reasoning is that with a subdivjder obligated by other sections of the bylaw to provide other major improvements streets waterlines sewers etc the town will be in an advantageous position to absorb hous ing which will pay its way taxwise and in fact more than pay its way in the case of higher cost homes council further assumes that no subdivider wi ii be happy to pay the extra 400 per lot with out a real effort to attract compensating industry for which a rebateis allowable on his payment 1 controversial corner t i by ian cast j nuclear weapon testing must be stopped the united stales now tias a stockpile of atomic and hydro gen bombs sufficient to destroy russia and china several times over she has sufficient nuclear weapons to contaminate fhe earths atmosphere to on v tent which would desstroy all living things it is reasonable jo assume that russia has an equal or greater supply of sudh weapons the testing of nuclear devices over the past twelve years or so has already contaminated the tmos- pnsere and some surface areas to an alarming degree it now ap pears probable that france will soon start tests of her own in the sahara desert nadian government should make strong representations to the three nuclear powers calling on them in the name of humanity to cease contaminating the world with ra dioactivlty this should be done now while canada is still without atomic weapons of her own while she can speak from a position qf moral right while she still has some independence from the ato mic arsenal of the united states other georgetowners who have made the national news scene include mrs m h moyer founder of the arts crafts of georgetown who also operates kirk kraft studio in norval- dr charles best codiscoverer of msulin and a sum mer resident near town since his boyhood whose son sandy is heltons federal member of parlia ment and famous in his own right as a lily bree der the late mrs paul beer whose handiwork is perpetuated in the ornate gate at lidia farrn styled live those in her hungarian homeland i miss kabella preston also a noted lily breeder rod coneybeare writer and radio personality livestock particularly cattle often provide headlines in the press in a district which abounds in prize stock truly it is a wonderful district we live in and one which provides more than ordinary in news the protagonists of continued nuclear test exposions point out rather naively that testing is es sential for the development of peaceful uses for atomic energy this js nonsense there can be lit- litle doubt that the vast majority of these test explosions are neces sary to promote the weapons as- pect of nuclear fission m testing were now confined to the develop ment of peaceful uses there would be no major problem research into nontmhtary uses of atomic energy is likely to be carried out under careful contaol and with ri gid scientific awardness of respon sibility it is military research under pressure from service chiefs and politicians which carries the greatest threat h is here where the sole interest is the b ingest bang and the greatest destruction that the danger lies residual radi ation and radioactive fallout are unimportant in weapon testing they must be kept to a minimum in nonmilitary experiments in view of the stockpiles of aom bombs held by russia and the us t is difficult to understand the frenzied production still going on tins is particularly so in the usa democracy supposedly run by the people one highly placed us official put his finger on the spot a few months ago when he said it was easier to continue production of bombs than to stop in other words the capitalistic countries of the western world can be most pros perous when engaged in a hoi war der under threat of a cold one if our governmental system is such thanwe must rely on military wea pons production in order to pros per then we need a new system the fact remains that further nuclear testing may endanger our existence or even the existence of generations to come at the mom ent there is an uneasy agreement between ruaij the u k and the us to a temirar halt in nuclear bomb tests it will be a worldwide iragedj if this agreement is nulh fied b the entrj of france into the atomic bomb race general il- gaulle was a difficult man to deal mlth during the 1al war
