africa in i recent letter which us georgetown friends can share in the article which follows a dental graduate from the university of toronto he h a s completed a tour of duty with the queens own rifles in cy pros and is now in vancouver here is how he describes his safari on the 12th of august a fin nlsfa airlines douglas dc6 rolled down the runway of nicosias international airport destin ation dark continent of africa aboa were88 soldiers of un hcyp who counted among their numbers three canadians and who would at the end of a nine day tour have visited countries such as egypt kenya tnd ethiopia first stopover was cairo the leading commercial centre of egypt and the largest city o n the african continent unfort mutely it was only an 18 hour visit and naturally the impres- aianswere vague and fleeting best recalled u the camel ride which took us around the pyra mlds of the ancient and once glorious egypt a camel ride even on a pyramid camel i s u extraordinary experience ly gracious steed crouched on the ground legs folded and as i mounted bis handler shouted instructions the animal rose in a succession of lurches and grunts while swaying back and forth and from side to side in a desperate effort to main tain my balance i learned first fhand why camels are known u ships of the desert weaving precariously be tween the pyramids feeling much like a seasick landlubber i was much relieved for the brief respite which followed as we swung under the 450 peak of the cfaeop pyramid our guide said we would stop to watch a professional climber scale the 4500 year old granite tower he did in 7 minutes a normal climber we were told wold spend 60 to 90 minutes after a few minutes rest he was on the ground beside us a gain a truly phenomenal dis play of agility and fitness as i swerved and swayed way from the pyramids i felt insignificant once out of their awesome range though and it the latter is one of the most graceful of animals it can jump 30 feet at a time and as high as 10 feet in the air next we saw the long neck of a gir affe and shortly thereafter the king of the beasts to our dis appointment he bad just eaten and not even the honking horns of our cars could disturb his slumber only once he raised bis head looked lofbly at then back to dreamland some king at dawn next morning we were still inside thehhasaiam bosei national park 1259 sq miles in area just north of mt kilmanjaro following the booking of an african guide who proved to be tops we felt amply repaid for rising early he not only led us to all ihe big game but found more than double the variety of species seen by our fellow tourists this reserve is particularly famous for rhinoceros and we were told they would charge anything near them this is pre- ciely what happened to us luckily the rhino decided our car was too much competition and swung clear by a few yards we were too excited to take one picture a memorable experience was meeting two masai warriors semi nomadic pasturalists and warlike their tribe once sue ceeded in terrorizing the kiku yu and other inhabitants dn ving them from their farmlands only during the early part of the last century were they pac ified by the british the two proud and independent men we saw were covered head to foot with red ochre well mixed with grease and demonstrated their ability with flat razorsharp spears they still use these to protect their cattle from raiding lions viewed from the sir ethiopia is beautiful with deep gorges volcanic mountain peaks and rugged plateaus addis ababa the capital is described as an island floating in a primitive sea around the dty there are several miles of bluish green eucalyptus trees originally australian and imported there in the 19th century addis ab aba means new flower quite appropriate for there are flowers in profusion lake much of africa the old meets the new in the city one of the oldest independent nat ions surrounded by islam she isolated herself from the rest of the world for nearly ten cent ones not until after the ital tan occupation and restoration of emperor haile selassie to the throne in 1941 were efforts made tomodcrnize thecountr the pace still appears to be painfully slow we visited africa hall an ul txa modern convention centre the united nations economic commission for africa holds its sessions here we visited the grounds of the imperial palace but were not permitted to enter the building last was the mar ket place with traders from 7 to 70 good salesmen all the bargains were irresistible anim al skins drums knives spears for a tenth of the asking price bargaining is characteristic for shopping in africa in both cities we visited night clubs and enjoyed the local food they werent quite what we expected the twist rock and roll and the jerk were ev erywhere no doubt these are some of the modern assets we heard about on our ninth day bags were packed and with souvenirs bulging from our pockets 12 hours later following a short stop in bijouti french somali land we were lining up for perfect landing at nicosia in retrospect it was the trip of a lifetime and i have gained a meagre insight into the east african way of life world council chairman speaks to kinelte club world councilchairman dr roger ellis of preston speak tag at a kinette club meeting jan 13th told his audience that the world council now includes some 70 000 members from 3 000 organizations in 30 participating countries he amused the members pre sent while recalling a trip to england he made as a guest of the roundtable of england and ireland stop nairobi capital of the recently independent british east african colony of kenya first was a visit to nairobi national park five miles from the dty centre travelling in a chauffeur driven mercedes through the 44 square miles of parkland was much different from our camel ride the park is an escarpment which des cends to a widespread grass plain in which there an num erous small water pans and a long stretch of the athi river we stopped by the river to watch hippopotamus and croca- diles in the pools which was in counting i tided to try and hitch a ride on the ear hood a we moved off the scramble for cameras was ustrioub we later learned there was no reason for hurry fqr after many years of prut ectfon the animals have ceased to fear humans next came an r strolling along the river stopping everyfew steps to pho- btfcgrapo the antics- of -themon- ktyt in etterjmroe back in the car we drove tibwiy throats herds of zebra wildebeest dikdik and impala horticulturists have 166 the whole very pleased with it dr harry har ley balton mp said last week be said that ha sympathized however with the people in nassagaweya vxho have a more natural affinity with burlington nassagaweya now in halton riding will join wellington rid ing which in torn loses erin township to halton but no one has approached me complaining about nassaga weya leaving halton riding if tin asked though i will cer tainly disenss it with the const itnents he said he said mps have 30 days to protest the redistribution to the electoral boundaries commission which will sit again after all protests have been nude the commission will then come up with decisions which will be binding the proposed redistribution win give oakville more of a ru ral area extending north but will not make much difference politically he said he said the commission bid divided the halton riding into two but had added erin town ship to the oakville side be- cautoit was short in population under the proposed revision halton riding wiu contain es- questng hilton georgetown and acton as well as oakville and erin burlington which now is part of halton riding becomes part of the new haltonwentworth riding that will include the town of dundas and east and west flamborough in went- worth county the only real- political differ ence will be that wellington ri ding will become more liberal with the inclusion o nassaga weya and the soss of erin he said alf hales who is pre sently conservative incumbent of wellington riding might he in difficulties during another election while erin is slightly more conservative than oakville it will probably not affect the vo ting in the area be said road building machine takes plunge in ditch four year old sean balnea suffered a cut on his forelfead when
