georgetown heram i put by ham newepepen limited 22 main street s georgetown ontario w c ilthn pubhther thursday february 10th 1966 editorial comment twentyfive years later attending s newspaper convention in toronto we were impressed by the changes which have taken place in our quarter cen 1ury in the trade it wes only a few years before we pined the herald that a typesetting rnach ine replaced the time consuming task of reproducing the thousands of words which appear in print weekly we had a beat up old printing press which filled the bill un til we moved to the present bu id ng and acquired a more modem one twenty five years ago every print ng job when the herald handled was dupl cated one at a time by hand feeding into a machine to us it was almost revolut on ary when we bought an automatic mach ne which increased production and el m nated one tiresome operat on for a pr nter now we are in a different age our smart newspaper press which we thought was the ultimate has gone to progress and the herald is printed on a high speed rot ary in another town a cheaper method of reproducing has enhanced the weekly s sue with numerous pictures hand set type which was still common in weeklies for head ngs and the larger type in advertisements is almost gone replaced with faster operat on by a lud low machine metal for spacing once pur chased tn strips cut to s ze and carefully jtorte and sa after each us ng is now fashioned from our own elrod machhe then scrapped and remelted outside our own local bus ness more and more weeklies are sw tching to an ownership changes just as marked as the phys cal chart ges in the newspaper business s the form of ownership which is becoming prevalent today s business world has little room for the small merchant and the weekt es are no exception we attended a convention just after our own sale to the thomson firm seven years ago and not everyone greeted us too cordially newspapermen were worr ed about the chains eatous of their pr vate ownership fearful that the bus ness world was changing it was last week we looked around the con vention floor and thought of all the m ss ng faces dozens of week es have been ac quired by firms i ke thomson the toronto star end tely and an engl sh cha n no more do you meet private owners from oak vihe brampton orangevtlle learn ngton midland stouffville aurora the cha ns have acquired port cred t newmarket burlington ampnor pdwassan barne some are now dailies advantage to farmers introduction of workmen s compensa tion protection for alf ontario farm em ployees ts a step long overdue in the prov i nee notonty does thisprottsct a workman offset process of reproduction which al lows even more scope for news pic jrw and advertising illustrations noticeable too among weeklies is the increase in front office staff we entered the field in a day when s small town newspaper was usually a one- man operation as far as the office was concerned there were no complicated bookkeeping operations not too much wor ry about balancing the cash every day ac counts were sent out when time allowed ora bank overdraft spurred a publisher into fast act on a weekly ed tor needed nothing so much as endurance he was a oneman of f ce staff news ana ed tor al writer book keepe advert s ng salesman and filled in any spa e moments assembling and packag ing printing jobs throwing hand set type back into the proper slots and sorting out the aforementioned metal spacing for the ever hungry compos tor to use again he folded newspapers on press day sold papers over the counter while labelling those which went to fhe ma i subscribers answering the telephone and taking in cash payments at the same t me but ust like the oneroom school the ho se and buggy the hand washing of clo th ng we have entered a new age and the odd thing is that today we seem to be ut as busy whether it s a shop or an office ob despite all the labour sav ng equ pment the extra staff and the acknowledged mprovements wh ch pr nt ing i ke all trades has acqu red m agriculture against the cost of accidents but it places the farmer in a better com petitive position as an employer by offer ing an advantage which m the past was available only to industrial and retail em ployees the same protection is available on a voluntary basis to farmers themselves who do not employ help and it would be fool hardy for these men not to take advantage of it news echoes frnn the hmwi 10 jo and 30 yean at wuary 1m the georgetown firm of j b mackenzie and son ltd ubmttfed the lowest of nine tenders for
