thi maip- aff n the mail bag scores secular unions for disregarding picket law 90- hadrnpxfv rexdale ontario february 21 1066 dear sir- now that no less than 70 highranking union officials uj ctydjng canadian labour cong ress president claude jodoin have triumphantly decided to launch immediately an intens- ive nation wide campaign aim ed at banning the use of court injunctions restricting picket- ing in labourmanagement dis putes canada can soon expect more piass picketing and mob lection in dictatorial defiance of lav and order the secular unions premedi tated and successful expenm i in ottawa where they nublidy flouted court rulings purposely violated the law of the land and what is worse ev o got away with it all hasl act an extremely dangerous pr cedent the disagreement be tween the oshawa times and the toronto newspaper guild s oshawa unit was quickly but cooly exploited to demonstrate daringly the secular un tons cynical contempt of court injunctions and their de termined drive to wipe such in junctions bom the statute jjookjj- what originally began asi 4jnn4 seemingly innocent jo- cal labour dispute about wages job security and union sceur- ity 0 dramatically developed ujto ftdlfttdged revolution cry protest against all court in junctions and finally ended up as a shocking political scanda ontarios leading socialist po litician and uwmsker npp lea dar donald c lfacdonald even publicly praised oshawa s unft ed aytp workers t actively participating p the mass packet ing and for unitedly defying the law the consensus of the 70 un ion officials was unashamedly summed up by mr david arch or pre of the socialist ontario federation of labour we believe the right of lawful assembly mass picketing takes precedence over a judge s nil rag when the two clash we are vefy pleased at what happened in ospawa mr archer who is also a member of the ontario labour relations board apppin ted by the government to adm iaister and enforce the labour illations act boldly declared that tbv labour movement is prepared to repeat the oshawa eypenment when the ingredi ants are the same he bluntly added tactics used in the strike against the times can not be applied in every situat in in every strike but where they can be big labour support ing small labour they should be if a present peterborough strike is not soon settled the oshawa tactics will be repeated there in view of these deplor able developments we might wplj ask ourselves pie trtiik apt question what action should be taken to prevent fur fher violation and breakdown of inrand order correctly pointed out among other things that the secular trade unwn movement has served notice in oshawa that it is unwilling to wait for the law makers to make its point il i has openly vigorously and con bsnmtuoosiy challenged the au thority of the courts the edi tor cuttingly commepted in canada we have the right to argue that laws are bad we have the right to defend oursel ves in court but lynne hyde who is directing this winters show was a prixe winner forsel design several times in the i past you have printed staleme- ents to the affect that mr hyde won an award for sat design and i would bke to take this j opportunity to correct this mis conception while it is true that mr hyde accepted an award at the 1 western ontario drama league festival the award was for he best visual presentation and was awarded to the georgetown little theatre and not to mr hyde 23 charles st february 26 1968 1 letter to the georgetown council gentlemen it is an admirable thing to have as our elected representa uvea men who feel that they must protect the taxpayers whom they represent after all we would not like to see our hardearned tax dollars fritter ed away frivolously by a profli gate council on the other hand may i remind you that when elected to office you are coram lued to acting in a responsible manner in a fast moving ago such as u s mmns mov mg always in a positive mann er and keeping in mind the con cept of development in your recently presented budget you revealed to us the fact that you do not really und ersund the needs of this town i refer to your decision to hold the line in financial matters no one will argue the fact that under the sycamore tree could not have won the award without mr hydes beautiful and creative seta but this aw ard is given for overall visual effect and includes best cost umes makeup properties light ing and sound effects and if these do not achieve an exeell ence of quality the most unique sets in the festival cannot jceive an award so while mr hyde certainly i deserves a good deal of the cre dit 1 feel that credit should al so go to sheila ijmbert and gay uoyd for makeup mary gpebel for costumes jean i jim rundle for the deserve when will wc have the ben efit of the services of fifteen police officers as recommended by the ontario police commiss ion 2 how can the cedarvale pro perty possibly be put into oper ation on a 4000 budget ally unchanged you appear to have ignored entirely the fact that membership in our library is growing at a very fast rate you do not seem to be aware of the fact that increasing numb ers of children are discovering and making use of the junior library or that many youngst ers from both public and high school go there in the evenings to do research work you do not seem to realise that at a time when terrific expansion in knowledge is going on it isj imperative that a public service such as the public library be kept uptodate incidentally may i suggest that whether or not you contemplate any bud i get changes it would certainly be an ducatinnal trip for you to go to the library and see for yourselves the activity going on there gentlemen i submit that your shortsighted policies are cost ing the people of georgetown more than they can afford to pay now and for the future it also seems obvious that no last minute rush motorists get plates i in sharp contrast to some of rices of the dcpt- of transport j georgetown showed no great last minute rush or long line ups in obtaining 1666 motor va- jhicle plates according to the local regis trsr but friday waa the heaviest day in the georgetown office i but there were only a handful waiting to obtain plates at op ening time business was stea dy all day but there never was what you call a lineup or any j waiting mrs clark d sat urday was a quiet day although i there were about 30 waiting for the office to open most of them were from brampton who having seen what seemed an oulsixed lineup over them came over here however by ten o clock it had developed into a rather quiet da although e did kct a steady trickle of peo pe from brampton all day by two o clock that afternoon the office was empty and we don t think there were more than a down stragglers during the rest of the afternoon though you may go your way congratulating yourselves holding the taxrate the next council will be faced with the unpleasant fact that it has to be raised in closing three cheers for mr smith the one councillor who seems to recognize the bud get for what it truly is short sighted yours ruly ericbalkind k
