vegetables by gordon lindsay smith r r 1 georgetown early planting regardless of how deep the enow may still be outside there is one garden planting job that cannot wait things like tomatoes zinnias petunias cabbageand other plants that tike too long to reach matur ity or flowering in the average canadian growing season must be started now in many areas of this country we can t be sure of more than ninety days june july and august in which there will be no danger of the temperature falling be low the 32 mark indeed in some places we cant be sure of more than sixty seventy live days outside for those ten der plants that will blacken and die with ibealightest frost once upon a time in our great grandfathers day peo ple were reconciled to these re- trtrictions and anything that would not ripen or flower free ly in two or three months they just did not plant this means they did not grow such things as petunias zinnias impatience begonias tomatoes cucumbers or even corn peppers and all sort of fruits now thanks to improved earlier varieties and short cuts like starting the seed indoors there is a very wide variety of flowers and vegeta ties for almost every part of canada we can if we like buy these tender things as started plants in pots and boxes from commercial gardeners and from greenhouses and where only a few items are needed this is the easiest and perhaps the best way but it is not difficult to start seed in shallow window boxes pots or trays and when a large number of plants are needed it is much mqre econ omical in these sort of things there are a few basic points to keep in mind the big danger is a disease called damping off that after they first start to grow to prevent this we should ste rile the soil by heating or us ing a special chemical a aim pie method where only a few window boxes are planted is to cover the top of the soil with about a quarter inch of finely ground or milled pest moss or sterilized sand or vennicnllte levelled and pressed down the soil itself should be a regular potting mixture of about one part loam one part peat moss or other humus and one part sand there should also be hoi es in the bottom for drainage seed should be planted in doors m march and when the plants have developed their 1st set of leaves transplanted into larger boxes or individual peat pots where they grow and stay until ready to go outdoors may two good hobbies fishing and gardening have much in common both take one out into the open air and sunshine both offer a little easy exercise and both are rel latively inexpensive and you can spend as little or ax much as you please but where these two hobbies are most alike however is in the advance plan ning thinking or dreaming we can do about them and in the boasting afterwards too the snow may still be a foot three feet deep outside right now but there is nothing to prevent us pouring over a cana dian seed catalogue ordering some new varieties and plan ning just where we are going to put them and this plan ning not only results in a bet ter and far mors interesting garden but it will give us lots of fun right now it is well however to have a pad and pencil ready and to jot down just what we are going to add and where and when so that when spring does arrive and there la a natural rush to get outside we will hsve thii new hepatitis outbreak at brookville school an outbreak of portable seniority plan during the next few weeks the hourly rated employees of domtar limited georgetown and the 14 000 employees of other domtar mills and plants which are covered by union agreements will have the op portunity to decide if they wish to take part in the recipro cal transferable seniority plan this plan is a break through effort on the part of the canadian labour movement and the management of dom tar limited by allowing for the crossing of union jurisdictional lines among domtar plants so this plan can be put into effect the unions concerned- have demon strated their deep regard for their rank and file members the purpose of the recipro cal transferable senonty plan is to permit employees to use a portion of their established seniority to obtain or o retain employment at a new location i if their job is discontinued and no alternative employment is available where they now work the transferred seniority will not in any circumstance ceed the accumulated
