march 3rd issue of your paper there appeared a letter with regards to the oah- awa times strike in the city of oshawa i would appreciate the same opportunity some comments en the strike i personally was in the city of oshawa every day the strike was on and one of the many people to walk the picket lines the strike bad the support of the workers and the clergy as well as many of the- business men tradesmen small business men and professional people in other words a large part of the community supported tbe strike many great men have denied the laws when they were unjust on moral grounds let us have some facts just what does the injunction mean the injunction chambers etymological dic tionary has this meaning for injunction act of enjoining or commanding an order a precept exhortation a writ of prohibition granted by a court of equity here the key word seems to be equity but what is there so equitable in the granting of injunctions to prohibit or limit picketing in legal strikes labor law recog nizes the right to strike when all the legal procedures have been exhausted and no other course is available except strike action to wrest from the em ployer a fair share of the fruits of his productivity when the strike becomes a fact the employer who has in the meantime coerced intimi dated and perhaps even threa tened employees applies to this court of equity for an in junction there is absolutely no question in anyones mind that it will be granted because this is an employer a free en trepreneur and therefore the economy of the country depends on him not so the worker because he can be replaced from the lists of unemployed who need jobs irrespective of the wages working conditions social benefits etc or the cost ctlivtng or ids ability to exist on what he would have to ac cept in order to get the job or hold the one he has the employer is not concer ned with human values only with profit by whatever means he does not acknowledge that without labour it would be 1m possible for him to have a bus iness because that would mean that he recognizes a social re sponsibly for bis employees further he will not acknow ledge that the worker is also the eventual consumer who must pay the price that is ask ed for the productwhether it u a fair price or not labour alone la on the receiving end of all the abuse the vilifica tion the condemnation of all the elements of our society even his own his family his employer bis organization and ma government are forever opposed to him and yet they always turn to him in che final analysis to produce what we chooseto callprogress in this onesided world of ours the laws of the country jus tifies its existence on the term justice for all and then without justification turns loose the injunction and with hyp ocritical smugness enjoins the will of the people the law of the land and the respect of law and order to suppress by every means at its command the lawful and justifiable activ ities of workers seeking a fair share of the wealth which reelect four- to further terms on hospital board the annual meeting of the georgetown fc district memor ial hospital association was held in the cafeteria of the hospital last thursday evening march ioth at 830 pm for the first time in the brief history of the hospital a cap acity crowd was present this year the board had decided to hold the meeting in the hospi tal itself in an effort to stim ulate interest in the event by the large number present com pared to meetings held in the past the idea was an unquali fied success the meeting began with ln- they with their the french revolution also had contempt for the law of the land and the french repub lic was born it is only when- the law is outdated when the sense of justice is lost when it becomes biased despotic when it infrin ges on natural human rights of individuals to freedom of ex pression of choice of associa tion of the right of determina tion that problems are created but when the law turns against the people for whom it presu mes to speak is when the con dition known as contempt for law and order rears its ugly head and no one decries it more than those self same peo ple who feel they must op pose it because it no longer represents justice but injust ice it no longer represents equality but inequality it imposes itself on the con sciousness as a threat to the future hopes and aspirations of those whom it claims to pro tect the only thing it appears to be protecting are the class interests of a privileged few let us hope that what has- hap pened will provide a timely and object lesson
