defence medical cen tre in ottawa are blood cells of a canadian donor whose blood type is at present the on yone-of-its- kind known these units are being stored against a day when the donor might re quire a transfusion two pieces of equipment the cytoglomerator and the deep freeze are the nub of canada s rare blood bank the only one of its kind in the country there are about 10 others in the un ited states planning for a rare blood bank in canada began in april 1064 it involved the department ol national defence the depart ment of national health and welfare and the defence re search board this project that was officially designated the rare blood bank of canada in volved the canadian red cross blood transfusion service there are at present about 40 units of rare blood stored in this bank one unit was used re cently in the treatment of mr laurie hendsbee of halifax the bank can handle about 125 ts so far as a known these units can be kept without deter ioration for five to eight years possibly much longer rare blood donations are col lected by the red cross the blood is then sent to ndmc in container surrounded by tins of ice and packed in a heavy duty cardboard box when arrives the blood is processed on the cytoglomerator which extracts the plasma white cell and leaves the red cells it is within the red cells that the blood types differ plasma can be used universally the red cells are put into a plastic sleeve about three feet long and mixed with glycerol solution this is spread out the length of tbo sleeve folded and placed in the deep freeze unit which maintains a temperature four times colder than a home frccz j with firm in montreal these celts can be reconstitu ted for shipment in 40 nun utcs this is again done by the cytoglomerator hich v ashes the red cells three times to re move the protective glycerol the final step is to suspend these cells m a saline salt sol ution in a plastic pack connect ed to the original sleeve this pack is used to administer the transfusion to date people with blood rare enough for collection have been found in all but three of canada s provinces that is not to say the other provinces are not without possible donors in fact a lot of people who have rare blood do not know it the only means of discovery would likely be through hospitalizat uon or as the result of making a lonation through the red cross when rare blood is found there are several techniques now available for is processing and storage this pilot process of deep freeze is termed succcs by specialists it has been establish obsefve precautlons cd that not only can these cells n j be safely tranifused but that in when usiiig kestlcldes many cases they are preferable rf h to fresh blood moreover the processed blood cells can be kept a considerable time per haps indefinitely thr national defence med gary mcnally son of mr and mrs charles mcnally terra cotta gary mc nally graduated last week from the university of toronto as a
