pairs who played these cards missed bidding a slam something is wmng some slams are difficult to bid you must find out not only your controls but if they arc in the right suit distnbu tion plays a very important part in many slams but here is a hand based on power alone northsouth arc vulnerable and the dealer is east north k 2 hj 9 7 5 2 h a a 2 c a q 8 wnt east s o 9 7 6 5 4s 10 1 h 8 h 10 3 i j 1 q 10 8 7 6 c k 9 7 6 5 c j 10 4 3 south s a j 8 h a k q 6 4 d k 5 4 3 c 3 east south watt north pass 1h pass 3h pass 4 nt paw 5h pass 6h opening lead diamord jack hie bidding is not as straight forward as it looks north has a difficult choice at his first opp ortunity to bid usually the jump raise in opener s suit is made on 13 15 potnu and good trump support north has 14 points inhigh cardi alone also has a doublcton spade five trump and a trump honour each of which rate a onepoint evaluation however with such a fine heart support and no other bid jnble suit north should raise hearts rather than invent a bid in at least one case west came in with some interference bidding thn often happens it duplicate west reached spades and was doubled went down six tricks for an 1100 point os this would have been fine i the olher pairs had reached mx heirts worth 1430 however onlv one pair played this hand at six hearts there is no problem lo the plav there is only one loser and that is in diamonds in order to attempt in ret rid of a diam ond loser declarer should take a finesse in spades this is not dansrrn s for ncn if the finesse fails a diamond can be discarded on the spade ace in this av declarer trades a spade loser for a diamond los er but i still wonder how three northsouthi out of five didn t find this heart slam monda s winners al acton bridge club 1st pair barbara smith
