ik the mail as mayor takes issue with youngs engineer stand hiyor offlos dec 11 1b67 dear kr editor who u mr yountj trylna to foolt it could bo hlmwlf it u my dralro to mention al w facts in connection with a letter over tho signature of cr james young published in tue herald edition of nov oth first he says he wants complain about an unjust move by municipal council by offering a salary of fourteen thousand and two hundred d lars 14200 annually to a mr baiter p eog for his sftrj vices to the town of george town mr young said he did not know anything about this man what an admission of com placency i think that most members of council including myself felt it was oto duty to ascertain this engineers ability before voting to engage him to carry on engineering duties for this corporation i can under stand now why councillor young prefers to pay tens of thousands of dollars yearly to consulting engineers rather than pay the prevailing rate to a man whom i am convinced has the ability to aliminate the huge fee we have been pag to consultants approximately three hundred and fifty thou sand dollars 350 000 for four years but mr daiters ployers for the last five years would not permit him to term inate his employment with them mr editor 1 refer you and your readers particularly to the second last paragraph of mr youngs letter when he said that council is getting careless in its spending of tax dollars maybe it is because of the two- year term he said wow the facts are in october 1066 mr young voted for the following resolution that by law 6679 to provide for a twoyear term of office be passed at a council meeting march 20 1967 mr young not only voted for but moved a resolution to give ft ual reading to by law 67 12 which was a by law providing for payment at committee meetings oh boyi how mr young wants to save the tax payers money in 1966 the police budget was eightyair thousand dollars 86- 000 with mr young as chair man and there was a deficit of approximately three thousand and five hundred dollars 3500 in 1967 with mr young again chairman the budget was set at one hundred and five thous and dollars 105000 and when mr young ceased to be chair man in october of this year and banded over the mess to the georgetown board of police commissioners his budget up to october this year showed a de- cat of fourteen thousand and seven hundred dollars 14 700 oh didnt mr young make a lame duck effort to save the taxpayers money in his depart- 1 ment mr young is also chairman of the volunteer fire depart ment but it is not my intention to discuss this because those men down through the years have dedicated themselves the protection of life and prop erty in this community thisneher mr editor not intended aa a personal at tack on cr j young rather it is an effort on my part to prts- ent lome facts verification of which may be obtained by any person in the clerks office when mr young tuggesta that tho electors axe complacent i submit this far from being a reality if i am any judge of public opinion i am sure re gardless of any subsequent makebelieve resolution the cl tlxens of georgetown are not and will not be unmindful ot the way the fee for committee meetings and the twoyear term were chucked down their throats by mr young and four other members of council due to the nature of this let ter it is my desire to for the last time i hope mention that i have not nor do i intend re- gardless of how long or short a time i remain in my present position on council to accept tho mayors salary or fee for committee meetings in 1963 the council of that day of which i was not a member provided for the payment of twenty dol lars 20 per meeting to mem bers of the georgetown hydro commission my to al fees am ounted to two hundred and for ty dollars 240 for the year 1966 in this connection rg ardless of the fact that the reeve and i have nothing what soever in common he vated ag ainst the payment of committee fees and he had the gom prln ciple not to accept any f in connection therewith i have prolonged this letter to a tmch greater extent than i intended to do and if you see fit to publish it i shall be grate ful very truly
