georgetown herald vamblim by riant nawapapet umltd 22 main stnaat south georgetown ontario w c biihn pobualpr pagc4 thursday july 11th 1968 editorial comment havrt budged the anticipated flood of letter obeo- tlnp to our rtwrk a boot th hall denote report on education ha not changed our rritfid one whit on the subject t werrfo not ay thet the report is all bed w do say that the basic premise of having children decide whet they want to loam and when of having no formal examinations no grades is placing leecheri odd student in n impossible situation wheth can only nilto the detriment of an upcoming gen era on we have per hop already been too permissive towards young people tending to take them too seriously we seem to be leaking a togetherness of wrwoh our paf- enjs never thought we have harped on thj bad things in our world on giving young people twew head to uch an extant that todays child thinks he has a perfect right to treat anyone over voting age as a rerjc of tho past our quarrel with the tjall report is tht a group of supposedly sensible adults codld come up with support for the atti ttnle of a young minority who frown on education as a means lo a better economic fukwe ard dream of some mystical world where they sit and contemplate the stars while some mysterious force looks after their bodily needs we don t criticise the youngsters too much jhi attitude is nol new and it to be expected particularly among university freshmen facing a new world of know ledge free of some of the guidelines of secondary schooling what ttiey nead end what they got in the past was a tolerance by adults who winked an eye at some of their shenani gens used a wet blanket when necessary but above all didn t exaggerate thing out of proportion now too many parents too many tea chers are fostering this freewheeling atti tude goading youngsters into paths of thinking which will have to be painfully discarded when the moment of truth a job arrives whether we like it or not wo live in a competitive world and the person wbo co ms out ort top is tho one who learns earty and well that he must conform to if per missive learning as the hall report recom mends can only lead o disaster for a gen eration of young peope if it ever is adop ted lets hope some sanity still exists am ong rnose we trust to chart our educational paths good news for seniors jfctih wr tmoaf the slew turners however hard we itried bow hopeless it teemed to compete with thoae seemingly hleaied people wbo bailed through ex ami without a care in the world the hallderails report rec otnmend that this rigid grading system be abolished and that each student be given the op portunity to advance at his own beet speed thus the slow student could achieve his own goals without the constant fear of failure and develop into a ueetul and con tented member of society in steed of a social dropout the advanced student would be able to move ahead as quickly as he tttcieimntt w chahgihg styles ffl ottawa the mail bag some senior citizens caught in an in fletionmy spiral when a fixed income is shrinking in value will welcome the news that town and townsh p may combine on enjpartment prefect- geared to income the kinsmen club has been active in pramohngjhiiiorjdmetimcind had rea ched the building stage a couple of years ego only to become bogged down n ied tape by the time this began to unravel costs had increased so sharply that the km had to take a second look at their prospect ive fmanc ng now instead of this being a pr vately financed project the provincial and federal governments will underwrite the cost com pletely only stipulation it that the munici pallties grant a fixed tax ceiling of 25 per year per un t the plan would seem to be an ideal one for a town like georgetown rents have reached the stage where an employed person is hard put to make his budget bal ance a pensioner faced not only with ris ipq rents but with a cost of living increase for food and clothing is finding it im possible to keep up unless ho has an extra source of income or an a fro h s farrwly fortunately many have tins and con truction of an apartment building will not mean that silver lining those who patronize gray coach lines will note that next monday the buses will return to-thett- former main street route and the terminal will move back to it former location at stan s restaurant since council pushed them off main street a few months ago h became more end more like a comic opera first the residents of church charles end maple lodged protest at the new route with some justification for their streets are mainly residential council immediately began to back track and suggestions flew thick end fast a return to main st a complete highway route and the old one of years back down mill and water street to the highway were all talked about one morning the parking meters which had been placed in fro it of the restaurant were removed and the terminal almost restored then a fast change was made back to the charles route meanwhile bus drivers began a merry lanes of changes on their own an odd bus went down main the occasional one ttrairjht through on the highway and one was even seen wandering up m ii street one day i residents along the new route had cooled off by this time and chances are hat the protest movement would have died a natural death and little more would have been heard about it there was nothing too wrong with the new route that we could see nor is there anyth ng wrong with a return to the old route j what emerged was an all too frequent change of mind by town council which i tfnds to shift i ke the wind perhaps coun cillors will learn from the r bus r de to a thoroughly discuss a probem before making a sudden move and b it has alwovs seemwi monstrous k cruel and injiuman to me lo fvaluate the progress of a human being with numbers or letters it is considerably more difficult to evaluate a students irnsp oa subject by noting his ndmduacprojrest through the chool year in personal discus a ion with him and in consults tion with other teachers yet this is thn practlo in the bus inosa world and would sem the least we bllities too often the present system stuhilee an interest in an area in which the student might otherwise have excelled xn the increasingly complex world in which these students will live and contribute surely there is a need for enthusiastic people with a much wider ring of interests technical education in a society almost domlnsted by technology it is tempting lo overemphsftize the importance of learning a trade as indicated by another ot your editorials the pitfall of traditional trade training is that it becomes largely obsolete as techniques change in your own business mr
