circle is strangely members of georgetown le ixed with the chilling thought that time has indeed marched gion who are interested in this project do not wish to run it they feel the young people should be responsible for the programing and administration but to feel free to approach the branch members if need be for advice or help and her baby arrived home for their visit i had made up my mind that my role would indeed be a gentle pne let there be no interfering in her ideas of how to cope said i sternly to myself but i neednt have wor- ried i coiildnt have agreed babies is nearly always done by more with her way of looking new mothers vvhojs a rule are afte the baby and id like to on howevergetting used to the idea is somewhat eased by the realization that your sense of personal dismay is based on a fallacy somewhere along the line you had formed an image of all grandmothers being old how sijly funny jjow id never sotieeri what a yojthful bunch iey really are anticipation not com pletely untinged with anxiety mounts as the birth day draws nearer and nearer and when the awaited grandchild finally appears on the scene im here to tell you joy reign uprcme aided and abetted by that never- failing sense of wonder in the oldest- miracle in the world how corny it sounds but how unique it is when it happens to you and yours needless to say be ing a new grandmother isnt nearly as hard on you as being new mother we have all the thrills without the discomforts but of course the catch is that its pretty hard to get to be one without the other i have always felt re gret that looking after small at such low ebb physically that they cant really enjoy their babies to the full but ive dis covered that if youve been short changed in that depart ment mother nature balances the score when she allows you to become a grandmother you may be older but youre feeling well rested that makes all the difference in the world to the way you can respond to a babys charms yea and demands a tell todays new mothers that theyre awfully lucky to be rais ing their babies under the per missive approach to infant care feeding them when they are hungry giving them a more satisfying diet and picking them up for a little loving when desired all helps take the ten- sion out of caring for a little i one the knowledge that thisi approach has been proven best for the baby leaves you mentally grandmother is hufine fettle to tree easy and relaxed to en- joy catering to his needs when- be entranced by it all seeing me in the role of grandmother provided an intrig uing source of entertainment for our son and daughter still at rome mum theyd say you are just unreal and to tell the truth i got quite a kick out of their reaction it didnt hurt them a bit to see mother cast in a shall we say gentler light before our daughter ever they occur how different it was when my babies were small and i blame mostof it on the little bluecovered book on ljab care given to all new mothers of that time before they left the hospital it instructed us to feed the baby on a strict four- hour schedule or a strict three hour schedule if the baby was real small no cheating even if the baby was howling its head off hours before the deadline for fear wed spoil him for life no food other than milk was allowed for many weeks and we must never but never commit the crime of put ting sucb an unsanitary thing as a comfort in our babys mouth if we felt nervous and weak before starting out on the scary task of caring for our first babythat little blue book was designed to reduce us to a complete shambles in short or der i cant remember who was responsible for it i rather nusj pect it was a government de partment and beliye me in torms of misery they have a lot to answer for ljljjcrc5ybvas far as can put on it the once close tics freq uently show signs of wear and tear becoming a grandparent strengthens those bonds once 1 more and you find youve not only gained a grandchild youve regained a
